UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has responded to the question of whether leaders competing from different groups were sidelined by not being given tickets at the general convention.
In an interview with Kantipur, Oli said that Ishwor Pokharel, who is competing with him for the post of chairman, has become a candidate from Kathmandu-5, and that Surendra Pandey and Yogesh Bhattarai argued that he was not given a ticket because he was not in a position to win. He said, 'There is no basis for Binda Pandey. Having differences with me is not a basis for getting a candidacy. We have to see what the situation is in the constituency. Whoever is in a position to win will get a ticket.' He also said that tickets cannot be guaranteed to those who are not in a position to win and have played a negative role. He said, 'Whether they win or not, it is not necessary to give them a ticket. Those who have a chance of winning have got it. There is no opposition.'
Former Communications Minister Gokul Baskota, who was once close to Oli, also did not get a ticket from Kavre this time. When asked why this happened, Oli argued that the situation in Baskota's constituency four years ago and now is different. He said, 'Gokulji has brought a little more division in the cadres. The cadres there were united yesterday, did he divide them a little today? Or was there dissatisfaction among the people with his work? Did it become a situation where the people did not like him and it was difficult to vote? Such things may have been evaluated.'
He said that those who got tickets last time will not be able to get tickets this time either, and that the one who won first will not necessarily win this time either. He said, 'A player is selected once, the next time he may not be selected. The captain selects players after calculating the objective of making his team win.'
