Four husband-wife pairs have entered the fray in the House of Representatives elections scheduled for February 21.
Two husband-wife pairs have filed their candidacies from the CPN-UML, while one each from the CPN and the Aam Janata Party has filed its nominations.
Raghubir Mahaseth and Julikumari Mahato of the UML have filed their candidacies in the direct election, which will be the first to file their candidacies across the country on Tuesday. They have been active in CPN-UML politics for a long time and have filed their candidacies from two constituencies in Dhanusha.
Julie filed her candidacies in the direct election from Dhanusha-3. Similarly, her husband Raghubir filed her candidacies from Dhanusha-4. Mahaseth has been a federal MP three times and is also a former minister. Julikumari was a member of the Constituent Assembly in 2064. She was defeated in 2070. She was elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Dhanusha-3 in 2074 and 2079. This is the fifth time she has entered the election fray because it is a constituency she won.
Another pair in the fray is Sher Bahadur Tamang and Ushakala Rai from Sindhupalchowk. Both Tamang and Rai are active political supporters of UML. Tamang has filed his candidacy directly from Sindhupalchowk 2 this time. He is also a former law minister. Defeated in the 2079 elections, he was elected from Sindhupalchowk 3 in 2070 and from Constituency No. 2 in 2074 after the constituency was reduced.
Tamang defeated Pashupati Shamsher in both elections, while in the first Constituent Assembly election in 2064, he was defeated by Maoist candidate Dawa Lama by 98 votes. His wife Ushakala Rai is on the proportional list this time. Ushakala's name is at number four among indigenous women.
While Tamang is in politics from Sindhupalchowk, Rai is in politics from Khotang. She was a provincial assembly member of Koshi Province. She was also the Minister for Social Development. Similarly, NCP leader Devendra Poudel and Mrs. Balawati Sharma are also in the election fray.
They have been active in the party since the People's War and are affiliated with the NCP politics after becoming Maoists. Poudel, who was contesting the election from Baglung, has changed his constituency this time and is standing from Nawalparasi-2. A former education minister, he is a direct candidate, while Mrs. Balawati Sharma is in the proportional representation. She is number one in the list of Khas Arya women in the proportional representation.
Similarly, journalist Rishi Dhamala's wife Eliza Gautam, who is contesting elections for the first time, has also been brought into the election fray. Dhamala has become the candidate from Rautahat 4 from the Aam Janata Party (AJP), while his wife Gautam is on the proportional list of the same party. Gautam, who recently joined Prabhu Shah's Aam Janata Party, has made her husband Dhamala a direct candidate by sitting on the proportional list.
The district where three pairs of brothers
brothers have filed their candidacies as competitors is Dolpa. Where brothers Dhan Bahadur Budha and Karna Bahadur Budha have registered their candidacies from the Nepali Congress. They are old rivals.
Since they are candidates from different parties, the competition between the brothers in this area seems to be interesting. Dhan Bahadur Budha had won from this area in 2070, 2074 and 2079. Karna Bahadur Budha is contesting elections for the first time. He has contested the election against his own brother after becoming the joint general secretary of the Nepali Congress in its special general convention.
The initial political affiliation of these brothers was in the same party. Congress Joint General Secretary Karna Bahadur Budha joined the Nepali Congress through the RPP. Dhan Bahadur Budha has now joined the Nepali Communist Party through the RPP, UML, and Unified Socialists.
Similarly, the late Deepak Bohora has two sons who have entered the election fray. They are not competitors but candidates from different constituencies. Prajwal Bohora has registered his candidacy in Rupandehi-1 from the RPP, while Gaurav Bohora has registered his candidacy in Rupandehi-3. Both of these are the sons of former minister Bohora. He was active in politics in this area since 2038 BS. He was also elected in the 2079 BS election, but the seat was vacant after his death.
The government had postponed the by-election in Rupandehi 3, which was vacant after Deepak's death, after the Genji agitation on 23 and 24 Bhadra when preparations were in the final stages. The government is going to hold the election at once on 21 Falgun.
