The CPN (UML) has fielded candidates ranging from youth to former ministers in all four constituencies of Sunsari district in the upcoming House of Representatives elections.
The party has claimed that the candidate has been finalized keeping in mind the organizational capacity, administrative experience and local public support.
Tika Manglen, a leader who rose from youth, emerging and student politics, has been made the candidate in Sunsari Constituency No. 1. Manglen is currently a member of the UML Sunsari District Committee and has been playing an active role in the party organization. Initially, the secretariat had decided to make Surya Pandhak, a provincial committee member, the candidate on Saturday, but after discussions and strategic considerations within the party on Sunday, the decision was made to make Manglen the candidate.
Tika Manglen, who was born on Bhadra 21, 2041 in the former Mamaflo (currently Shreejangha Rural Municipality-6) of Taplejung, has a master's degree in political science and an LLB.
Similarly, in Sunsari Constituency No. 2, the last-minute change of candidate has been made and Sujan Lama has been made the candidate. Earlier, the party had decided to make Koshi Provincial Assembly member Rewathiraman Bhandari the candidate. However, the party had decided to withdraw Jagdish Kusiat, who was also the district in-charge, from Sunsari-4 and field him as a candidate in Sunsari-2.
After Chairman KP Sharma Oli gave a ticket to Abul Hussain Ansari, who had left the Congress and joined the UML in Sunsari-4, it was decided to stop Bhandari and field Kusiat as a candidate in Sunsari-2. However, after internal disputes and dissatisfaction increased in the party, the party canceled Hussain's ticket at the last minute and fielded Kusiat as a candidate in Sunsari-4 and fielded Bhandari in UML constituency 2. However, Sujan Lama had received the ticket before the nomination was filed on Tuesday. He is the coordinator of the Youth Association Koshi Province. He has filed his candidacy in Sunsari constituency 2. Lama had earlier lost to Rupesh Basnet for the party's Itahari Nagar chairmanship.
The party has fielded former minister Bhagwati Chaudhary, who has strong women's leadership and experience as a federal MP, as its candidate in Sunsari constituency number 3. She is a member of the party's central committee and is playing a role in strengthening women's leadership and social inclusion. She has previously contested from constituency number 3 twice.
She was defeated by Vijay Kumar Gachhadar in the 2074 BS House of Representatives election, but in 2079 BS she contested again and defeated Gachhadar by a huge margin and became a member of the House of Representatives. She also has extensive ministerial experience. She has also held the positions of Minister of State in the Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation, and the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizens.
Similarly, Jagadish Prasad Kusiat, an experienced, long-time active member of the party organization and former minister, has been fielded from Sunsari-4. He is contesting the election for the 8th time.
He entered the communist movement from student politics and has been continuously active in the party since the end of the Panchayat period. Within the party organization, he has fulfilled his responsibilities from the district committee secretariat to the central committee member. His electoral history is long and ups and downs. He contested against Girija Prasad Koirala of the Nepali Congress in the 2051 BS House of Representatives election but was defeated. Girija Prasad Koirala contested from two constituencies and one seat fell vacant, and won the 2053 BS by-election with a narrow margin. In 2056 BS, he contested from Saptari Constituency No. 1 but was defeated.
He contested against Upendra Yadav in the 2070 BS Constituent Assembly election but could not win. In the 2074 BS election, he won as a member of the Provincial Assembly and then became the Minister of Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment in the Koshi Province government. In the 2079 BS House of Representatives election, he was defeated by Gyanendra Bahadur Karki of the Nepali Congress from Sunsari-4.
