Energy expert Kushal Gurung's candidacy from UNEPA in Kaski-2

Ujjaya Nepal Party central member and energy expert Kushal Gurung has registered his candidacy for the upcoming House of Representatives elections from Kaski Constituency No. 2. Gurung reached the office of the Chief Electoral Officer in Pokhara on Tuesday and registered his nomination papers.

Gurung, who has been active in resolving Nepal's energy crisis and environmental protection for a long time, has made the country's economic prosperity and good governance his main election issues in this election. Speaking to media persons after registering his candidacy, he recalled that he had contributed technically to freeing the country from the darkness of load shedding and said that he now wants to make the country 'bright' economically by reaching the policy-making level.

Stating that the people have been fed up with traditional political parties and leaders, he expressed confidence that the voters of Kaski will choose a candidate with vision and potential this time. He has prioritized the promotion of Pokhara's tourism, development of green energy and creation of employment for the youth at the local level.

In the politically hot Kaski Constituency No. 2, Rashmi Acharya of UML, Madhav Prasad Bastola 'Madhu' of Congress, Hem Bahadur Thapa of NCP, Uttam Prasad Poudel of Rashwapa and other candidates from various political parties are in the fray. However, Gurung's candidacy, which has gained expertise in the fields of energy and environment, is seen to make the competition here more interesting. He has adopted a strategy to attract especially the younger generation and neutral voters. He has expressed his commitment to change Nepal's traditional development model by reaching the parliament as an expert.

His professional and academic background is considered very strong. He has special experience of working in the 'low carbon' sector in various countries in Asia and Europe for about 15 years. He is the founding CEO of 'Windpower Nepal', which works in the field of renewable energy and climate change. In addition, he is the co-founder and director of 'Gandaki Urja', which produces compressed biogas and organic fertilizer from organic waste, and through 'Mutha Agro', he is also leading modern hydroponic farming.

Gurung, who works as the president of the Nepal Renewable Energy Confederation at the national level, has also served as an expert member of the Environment Protection Council of the Government of Nepal. He has contributed at the policy level as a member of the board of directors of the Council and the Alternative Energy Promotion Center, which is chaired by the Prime Minister. He has been selected as the 'Aspen Idea Festival Fellow 2024' by the Aspen Institute in the US and as the 'Asia 21 Young Leader' by the Asia Society.

The University of Edinburgh Business School in the UK has included him in the list of the best 100 alumni of the past 100 years. He has completed his master's degree in 'Carbon Management' from the university and in Environmental Science from Tribhuvan University.
