Two provincial assembly members elected from Lumbini Province have resigned from their posts and will contest the House of Representatives elections. Dhan Bahadur Maski of Dang from the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) and Dharma Bahadur Chaudhary of Bardiya from the Ujjaya Nepal Party have resigned from their positions as provincial assembly members and will become candidates for the House of Representatives.
Chaudhary was previously elected to the Lumbini Provincial Assembly from Bardiya 2 (2) of the Civil Liberation Party. He left the Civil Liberation Party on Thursday and became the general secretary of the Kulman Ghising-led Ujjal Nepal Party.
Maski of the Nepali Communist Party is going to be a candidate from Dang Constituency No. 3 and Chaudhary of the Ujjal Party is going to be a candidate from Bardiya-2. Maski had earlier defeated UML's Hukum Bahadur Basnet from Dang 3 (2) in the 2079 elections from an alliance including the then CPN-Maoist, Unified Socialist Party and Nepali Congress by a margin of 2,163 votes. Basnet got 20,158 votes while Maski got 22,321 votes. Maski had become the Minister of Economic Affairs and Planning of Lumbini Province. Maski said that he had resigned from the post of Provincial Assembly member on Sunday.
Similarly, Chaudhary, who is going to be a candidate for the House of Representatives from Badinya-2, has also resigned from the Provincial Assembly. He said that he submitted his resignation to the Provincial Assembly on Sunday. He had won the 2079 election from Bardiya 2 (2) with 20,127 votes. He was elected from the Nagarik Unmukti Party by defeating Man Bahadur Tharu of the Maoist Center, who was a candidate from the Maoist-Congress alliance, by a margin of 9,143 votes. Chaudhary, who also became the Minister of Physical Infrastructure from Nagarik Unmukti in the Provincial Assembly, left the party and chose the Ujjaya Party after the continuous controversy over Nagarik Unmukti.
‘I am resigning from both the posts of party member and provincial assembly member and am becoming a candidate for the House of Representatives election,’ he said. ‘I have sent my resignation to the provincial assembly on Sunday.’
Lumbini Provincial Assembly Secretary Durlabh Kumar Pun said that the secretariat has received the resignation letters from both provincial assembly members. ‘The resignations of both have arrived on Sunday,’ he said. ‘Now the secretariat is preparing to complete the necessary process and post the notice by Monday evening.’
