The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has decided to field former president Kamal Thapa as its candidate in Kathmandu-5. Thapa, who had previously contested the election from Makawanpur, was given a ticket by the RPP this time to contest from Kathmandu.

Chairman Rajendra Lingden has warned that the cadres will rebel, saying that Thapa, who was recently brought in after the party unification, was given a ticket without the recommendation of the regional committee. There is dissatisfaction that Thapa, who does not have a recommendation, is becoming a candidate in line with the sentiments of the Gen-G movement, sidelining the youth.

One of the aspirants, Hikmat Jung Karki, said that he was disappointed by the party's decision. He said that it was a matter of regret that the party should move forward according to the wishes of the youth and that it could not happen, and that discussions are underway on how to move forward now. He has warned that from giving a rebel candidacy in the party to rebelling against Kamal Thapa's candidacy in the party.

The regional committee had recommended the names of regional chairman Navin Khadka, central vice-chairman Hemjung Gurung, Dr. Prakash Chandra Lohani, Hikmat Jung Karki, Keshav Regmi in that area. Thapa was defeated in the first general election held after the restoration of democracy in 048. He won the mid-term elections in 051. Thapa has served as a minister nine times since 051, including eight prime ministerial terms and nine in the cabinet of former King Gyanendra in 062.

Similarly, Thapa was defeated in Makawanpur-1 in 056, and in the Constituent Assembly election of 064, he was defeated from Makawanpur-3. In the Constituent Assembly election of 070, he became a proportional candidate.

Similarly, in the House of Representatives in 074, he ran again in Makawanpur-1 but was defeated, and in the 2079 election, he was defeated from Makawanpur.
