30 central members of the Nepali Congress have urged General Secretary Gagan Thapa to adopt maximum flexibility to prevent party division. In a discussion with Thapa at a house in Putalisadak, Kathmandu on Wednesday, the leaders said that the party should be prevented from splitting.
While the process of selecting a new leader for the special general convention is underway, a group of 30 central members have asked Thapa to be as flexible as possible to prevent a party split. A central member who attended the meeting said, “We have urged General Secretary Thapa to adopt maximum flexibility to keep the party united.”
According to the central member, the conditions include that the central committee and the establishment party should take ownership of the special general convention and that Gagan Thapa should be made the prime ministerial candidate after the upcoming elections. The central members have urged them to be flexible to prevent a split when President Sher Bahadur Deuba has already agreed to give the acting president the responsibility of signing the ticket.
After listening to the central members, General Secretary Thapa said that he was trying his best to keep the party united but had not received a positive response from the establishment party. “I am trying my best. There are conflicting things coming from there. There has been no clear proposal from the president either,” Thapa had told the leaders.
The discussion was attended by central members of the party's unity faction, including Udaya Shumsher Jabra, Pushpa Bhusal, Arjun Joshi, Rajan KC, Nanu Bastola, Gopal Dahit, Yogendra Chaudhary, Dila Sangraula, Janaki Singh, and others.
