If the party breaks up, I will be the first to leave the hall: Sharma

What you should know

Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma has clarified that the second special general convention to be held in Kathmandu on December 10 and 11 is not intended to divide the party but to give the party new energy and direction in line with the changing times.

Making his views public through social media, Sharma has said that the special general convention is completely legal, binding and the need of the hour.

Addressing the questions raised within and outside the party after the special general convention was called, Sharma has rejected the suspicion that the party will split if there is a special general convention. Saying, “There will be a special general convention, the party will not be divided,” he said that if there is a situation of party division, he will be the first to leave the convention hall and stand with everyone to save the party.

Stating that it is unnecessary to question the legality of the general convention, Sharma reminded that according to Article 17(2) of the party statute, there is a binding provision to call a special general convention within three months if 40 percent of the general convention delegates make a written request with specific reasons. According to him, the special general convention cannot be stopped just because the central committee does not consider it necessary.

Stating the reason for the need for the special general convention, Sharma said that the current Nepal is not the Nepal that existed before Bhadra 23. He said that in a situation where time, circumstances, challenges and responsibilities have changed, the party needs to stand together and take a new vision, plan and resolve. Therefore, he mentioned that special circumstances, special decisions and a special general convention are inevitable.

Sharma said that the illusion that representatives who did not sign the demand during the general convention will not be allowed to participate is also baseless. Stating that the special general convention is a common platform for not only those who signed it but also all the general convention representatives, he called on leaders and workers at all levels to participate in the inauguration ceremony to be held at Bhrikutimandap on Poush 27.

Sharma also disagreed with the suspicion that the special general convention will affect the candidacy registration on Magh 6 and the election process on Falgun 21. Stating that the Congress, which has entered the field with vigor, will give better results than the Congress, which has withered, he claimed that the party will go to the elections unitedly after successfully completing the special general convention.

Realizing the responsibility of the changing times, the party should transform itself, Sharma said that implementing the provisions of the statute is not party division, but rather the protection of the statute. He urged everyone to present their opinions humbly even if there is disagreement, reminding them that the expression of ideas will be peaceful and melodious. He concluded that the special general convention is for the Congress of the changing times and for the country that needs to change.
