Sunil, the son of former Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa, the founding leader of the Nepali Congress, joined the Nepali Congress in Shrawan 2077. He joined the Nepali Congress along with 11 central members of the Nepali Congress. Sunil left when the three Nepali Congress parties led by Kamal Thapa, Pashupati Shumsher Jabra and Prakash Chandra Lohani united.
