Congress General Secretary Sharma announces not to contest elections

”Even if you lose in one area, you lose in another, or at one level, you have to become a candidate. You have to remain a minister as long as you have the thought of 'capturing' the area. It is necessary to break this trend in our politics.” - Sharma

Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwaprakash Sharma has announced that he will not contest the upcoming elections. Speaking at a meeting of the Nepali Congress central working committee on Thursday, Sharma informed that he has proposed to the leaders and workers of the region to nominate other candidates this time as he has been a candidate for three consecutive terms.

‘You can become a candidate as long as your ‘power’ allows you. It doesn’t matter if you win, you won’t leave the constituency even if you lose. You have to become a candidate even if you lose in one constituency or another or at one level. You have to remain a minister as long as you have the breath to ‘capture’ the constituency. It is necessary to break this trend of our politics,’ he said in the meeting, ‘Therefore, since I have been a candidate for three consecutive times, this time I would like to inform you that I have proposed not to become a candidate and put forward other friends.’

Sharma’s single name has been unanimously recommended from Jhapa-1. He has also expressed his gratitude for that. ‘In the last election, I was limited to my constituency, this time I will go with the party candidates nationwide,’ he said. Earlier, in a meeting with President Sher Bahadur Deuba, he had said that he would contest the election if the general convention could not be held before the election.’

Sharma has supported another general secretary, Gagan Thapa,'s proposal to hold a central general convention on Poush 26 after holding ward and regional conventions. He said that the previously brought agenda should be amended to hold three-level conventions.

Sharma said that since there is no election environment, the party should suggest to the government to postpone the elections to Baisakh after holding all-party discussions. He has suggested an alternative to hold elections in seven constituencies of seven provinces in another Baisakh, which could raise constitutional questions if the elections are postponed to Falgun 21.
