UML leader Gokarna Bista has said that the method of selecting representatives to the general convention should be made more democratic, transparent and healthy.
In an interview with Kathmandu Post , he said, 'Where and in which places there were problems should also be a matter of evaluation.'
Stating that it is not possible to say otherwise about the results of the general convention, he said that if there is any deficiency in the method of selecting representatives, more work should be done on it in the coming days. Stating that questions have been raised about the representatives coming from some clusters and some districts, he said that he is not satisfied with some of the decisions made by the organization department.
He said, 'I do not want to go back on this. But the more institutionalized the practice of cadres choosing representatives through a free and democratic process in the upcoming general convention and those representatives choosing the leadership, the stronger the party will be.'
Bista also argued that different opinions have got a better place in this general convention compared to the previous Chitwan general convention. Stating that there is a fear that the competition of the general convention will create a rift within the party, he said that this will not happen and that they will also take the initiative for that. He said, 'The party president also has a role in this.'
He also expressed his views on how the party would address the message given by the Gen-G movement. Stating that it is natural for the youth to want the country to move in a new direction, he said that the experience of the older generation should be combined with the energy and talent of the youth. He said, 'We accept that there is a gap between our work and the psychology of the youth, and to win their trust, that gap must be reduced.'
When asked why there was a compulsion to form the Youth Volunteer Force despite the existence of youth and other organizations within the party, he did not give a clear answer. Although he said that he did not believe in any form of armed groups or 'squads', he did not explain the purpose of forming such a force after the Gen-G movement. He said, 'The Youth Volunteer Force was formed at a time of crisis within the party and the country. The party leadership, especially the party chairman, will have to answer about its relevance.'
In the first week of Mangsir, UML had announced the Youth Volunteer Force. Pushparaj Shrestha, who was selected as the central command chief of the force, was revealed to be a multiple accused in criminal cases.
