Congress to fly party flag at half-mast for three days in wake of leader Upadhyay's death

The Nepali Congress has passed a condolence resolution on the death of former central member of the party and former minister Amod Prasad Upadhyay and decided to fly the party flag at half-mast for three days in his mourning.

The meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee held today under the chairmanship of party Vice President Dhanraj Gurung expressed grief over his death and passed a condolence resolution. The meeting decided to fly the flags at half-mast at the party's central office, provincial offices and district offices on Mangsir 29, Poush 1 and 2, informed Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Poudel.

Leader Upadhyay passed away on Saturday, Mangsir 27, at the age of 91, while undergoing treatment for cancer at HAMs Hospital in Kathmandu.

His body will be cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat today, the party office has said.

Upadhyay, who was nominated as a member of the National Assembly in 2048, was elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Morang Constituency No. 1 in the by-election held on Mangsir 23, 2056. In 2056, he was the Minister of Education and Sports, and after the 2062/063 People's Movement, he was a member of the re-established Legislative Assembly. In the 2064 Constituent Assembly member election, he was elected from Morang Constituency No. 1.

Upadhyay, known in the party as a decent and intellectual personality, has skillfully discharged his responsibility as the coordinator of the party's Central Disciplinary Committee in 2069, according to the Nepali Congress. Upadhyay, who was arrested and imprisoned several times during the political struggle, had also spent his life in exile. Upadhyay, who has a special interest in social service and studies, has also published articles in various newspapers and magazines.
