Nepali Congress Central Treasurer Umesh Shrestha has been recommended as a candidate for the proportional representation (PR) in the upcoming House of Representatives elections. Both Chitwan Constituencies No. 2 and 3 have recommended Shrestha as a candidate for the proportional representation (PR) system.
Shrestha had earlier lost to Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSWP) President Rabi Lamichhane in Chitwan-2 in the 2079 election. Chitwan President Rajeshwor Khanal informed that the names of all the aspirants have been recommended since they could not reach a consensus.
According to him, 14 names, including Treasurer Shrestha, have been recommended from Chitwan-2 under the proportional representation system. From here, 10 people, including Congress President Khanal, have aspired for the direct representation system. Their names have all been recommended. According to President Khanal, Treasurer Shrestha's name has also been recommended from Chitwan-3 under the proportional representation system.
The District Working Committee has decided to send the list of names received from the constituency to the center with the comment that those who became members of the Constituent Assembly and MPs through the proportional representation system in 2070, 2074 and 2079 should be made candidates directly instead of through the proportional representation system this time, said President Khanal.
'The district committee held a meeting on Thursday. The central circular said that three names, including one woman, should be sent from the constituency. But more names came than that,' said District President Khanal.
According to him, the meeting has recommended four names from Chitwan-2 for the National Assembly elections to be held on Magh 11. Similarly, Chitwan-1 has recommended 12 names for the House of Representatives directly, 6 for proportional representation and two for the National Assembly.
Constituency No. 3 has directly recommended 13 names, including Congress central member Dinesh Koirala, who stood as an independent with the support of UML in the previous election. It has recommended 17 names, including central treasurer Shrestha, for proportional representation and seven names, including party central member Tek Prasad Gurung, for the National Assembly.
Treasurer Shrestha, who was recommended for proportional representation, had previously become an MP for proportional representation in 2074.
