Leaders in favor of a special general convention in the Nepali Congress have said they will not participate in the discussions without a formal letter. They did not attend the meeting called by acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka this morning based on verbal reports.

The discussion could not take place today after a petition was registered with the party central office demanding a special general convention and a formal letter was requested to discuss the matter.

'The party had not had any discussion with us till now. The acting president called us orally today. We respect that. But since the demand for a special general convention has been formally registered with the party central office, it should be called formally. And we said that we will sit in on the dialogue,' said Subash Pokharel, a leader in favor of the special general convention.

According to him, the demand for a special general convention, not a regular general convention, has been raised in the discussion with the special general convention supporters. 'We are clear that when discussing with us, we should discuss a special general convention, not a regular one,' he said.

Meanwhile, President Sher Bahadur Deuba is holding discussions with General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma to reach an understanding on the general convention. Leaders including Krishna Prasad Sitaula and Bimalendra Nidhi, who are adamant that the general convention should not be held before the elections, are also present in the discussion. But no conclusion has been reached in the discussions so far.

The general secretaries are adamant that the general convention should be held before the elections, while the majority of members of the establishment party, including Sitaula and Nidhi, are adamant that the general convention should be held only after the elections. The gathering of the establishment party, in the presence of Nidhi and Sitaula, has reiterated its previous stance. Another group of 28 central members of the establishment party, however, has suggested to the leadership to come up with a schedule, saying that a regular general convention should be held before the elections.

Leaders in favor of the special general convention had been complaining that the party had not formally called them to discuss the issues they had raised.

Acting President Khadka had also called the special general convention supporters for a discussion this morning to reach an understanding on the issue of the Congress general convention.
