Leaders have become active in resolving the Congress general convention dispute. Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka have been holding discussions with their group leaders since morning. Efforts are underway to reach an understanding and take a decision on the general convention ahead of the central working committee meeting to be held on Thursday.
But so far, the establishment party has not been able to ensure a general convention before the election. Meanwhile, General Secretary Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma are pressuring for a special general convention.
According to a leader close to Deuba, the establishment party is setting a condition that the regular general convention schedule will be brought by mid-Poush, but the special general convention supporters must withdraw the petition for a special general convention registered at the party central office on Asoj 29.
President Deuba has discussed with some leaders, including acting president Khadka and central member Ramesh Lekhak, on how to move forward in a situation where the general secretaries and leaders in favor of a special general convention have already rejected the establishment party's condition. After the discussion with the president, Khadka is preparing to discuss with general secretaries Thapa and Sharma. Today, Deuba is also preparing to talk to another leader from the non-establishment party, Shekhar Koirala.
Since the regular general convention is not held before the election, it is legally mandatory to call a special general convention, so President Deuba is ready to bring a regular general convention within mid-Poush. However, the signatory general convention representatives are gathering in the capital today, saying that they intend not to bring a general convention that will only bring a schedule due to the condition that the application for the special general convention be withdrawn.
According to Devraj Chalise, a leader in favor of the special general convention, he says that since there is time pressure to hold the regular general convention, preparations for the special general convention should now begin. If the entire central committee has the will, a regular general convention can still be held within mid-Poush through a short process, but since the establishment side does not seem ready for that, he argues that a special general convention should be held.
Chalise said that so far, both the party president and the acting president have not formally called the leaders in favor of the special general convention for formal talks and discussions. He Although they tried to resolve the immediate dispute by bringing a schedule for mid-December, the general convention was seen as a temporary one.
Chalise said, 'If the general convention is to be held within mid-December, the application for a special general convention will automatically lapse from that general convention, there is no need to withdraw it. To say that it should be withdrawn means that the schedule is brought, but the intention is to not hold the general convention, which we do not accept.'
