Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sarbendra Khanal has formed the 'Samunnat Nepal Party' under his own chairmanship. Khanal has also submitted an application to the Election Commission for registration of the newly formed party.
Khanal said that an application has been submitted to the commission to register the party with a proposal for a 41-member working committee with himself as the president.
He recently resigned from UML and has formed a new party under his own leadership to participate in the upcoming elections. Khanal said that an application has been submitted for party registration and that he will contest the upcoming elections with an agenda of good governance and prosperity.
Khanal entered politics less than 3 years after completing 30 years of service in the Nepal Police. He was inducted into the party by UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli on Asoj 20, 2079.
In the 2079 House of Representatives elections, he was defeated by Shishir Khanal of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Party from Kathmandu-6. While Shishir Khanal got 14,204 votes, former IGP Khanal received only 8,911 votes.
Within 6 months of his defeat in Kathmandu-6, he became a candidate from UML in the by-election held in Baisakh 2080. In that by-election too, he lost to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) candidate. While RSS candidate Swarnim Wagle received 34,918 votes, Khanal came in third with 8,488 votes.
In the by-election held after Ramchandra Poudel, the elected MP from Tanahun-2, became the President, Congress candidate Govinda Bhattarai received 20,122 votes.
