A new party is set to be formed with the 'backup' of former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and former Maoist Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma.
Durga Sob, coordinator of the Nepal Samajwadi Party (New Shakti), Sudan Kiranti, coordinator of the Progressive National Campaign, and Santosh Pariyar, former chief whip of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party, have decided to form a new party by reaching a five-point agreement. Sob is the coordinator of New Shakti after Bhattarai stepped down as the chairman, while Kiranti has been appointed the coordinator of the Progressive Campaign formed by Sharma. Pariyar left the National Independent Party on Friday and started forming a new party. Bhattarai left the Maoists in 2073 and formed New Shakti, while Sharma formed the Progressive Campaign without joining the party unity.
'We agree to make the name and election symbol of the newly formed unified party the same for unity and polarization.' We have agreed to hold a comprehensive unity declaration program on Mangsir 7,' the agreement of the three leaders states, 'We call on progressive, democratic, leftist and patriotic forces living in the country and abroad, and especially the Gen-G generation, to participate in the campaign for comprehensive political restructuring.'
They have also appealed to all new and alternative forces and young people to join hands to defeat corrupt, immoral and arrogant tendencies through elections.
They have said that they have taken the goal of 'fulfilling the challenging historical task against the backdrop of the Gen-G movement against the country's serious economic-political crisis, corruption, nepotism, unemployment and widespread corruption seen in political parties, providing a progressive solution to national politics and restructuring Nepali politics as a whole.'
Preparations are underway to form the Progressive Citizens' Party for party registration with the Election Commission. Pariyar said that other names have also been mentioned in the alternatives.
