Six office bearers are giving their views in the Congress meeting on Thursday. In the meeting that began on Asoj 28, one vice-president, two general secretaries and four joint general secretaries are yet to give their views. Although everyone finished speaking on Thursday, the meeting has not reached any conclusion on the issue of the general convention.
Within the establishment party, seven former office bearers have taken a stand that no general convention should be held before the elections. However, members other than the seven former office bearers are of the opinion that a middle-ground solution should be adopted. They have shown flexibility in coming up with a schedule to hold the general convention by mid-May, except for the seven former office bearers and their supporters, members of the establishment party themselves.
Meanwhile, General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma are preparing to call a special general convention if the regular general convention is not held by May. Due to the stance of the seven former office bearers, Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka has become helpless, while the General Secretaries are doing their homework to prepare for the special general convention.
Shekhar Koirala, who is not in favor of the special general convention, has also been taking a stand for a regular general convention in May. He has demanded that the Central Working Committee itself call a special general convention if the regular general convention schedule is not brought.
Acting President Khadka has not been able to reach any decision due to pressure from seven former office bearers. This has left the Congress meeting indecisive for a long time.
Various gatherings have started taking place within the Congress, including outside the Central Working Committee, regarding the general convention. As this has raised concerns that it will lead to a party split, some leaders of the establishment side are in favor of taking a decision on the general convention only after President Sher Bahadur Deuba returns. Deuba is scheduled to return on Friday.
According to an official, after the series of opinions expressed in Thursday's meeting is over, the meeting will be adjourned for a day or two to reach an understanding on the decision. There is also a dispute within the Congress about whether to say anything about the agenda of the restoration of the House of Representatives after the general convention. The last time, 45 MPs of the dissolved parliament signed on the issue of the restoration of the House of Representatives.
In the Central Working Committee meeting, Ramesh Lekhak, a leader close to President Deuba, has been saying that the issue of the restoration of the House of Representatives should be taken forward along with the elections. "Since the then MPs are required to sign the directives of the chairman, there is a possibility that a decision will be made after the chairman returns on what to say when the party takes a decision on this," said another central member close to Deuba.
