Former Minister Janardan Sharma, who left the CPN-Maoist Center and announced the 'Progressive Campaign, Nepal' campaign, has appeared weak in his home province of Karnali.
Most of the leaders from his home district of Rukum West also attended the Maoist Center's General Convention Organizing Committee meeting on Tuesday and the Party Unity National Conference on Wednesday.
Karnali Province President Bimala KC, Rukum West Party Coordinator Sachin Roka, District Incharge Basant Sharma, Central Member Gopal Sharma, who has been with Sharma for a long time, and other leaders were present at the Maoist General Convention Organizing Committee meeting and also attended the Party Unity National Conference.
Currently, only former Karnali Chief Minister Rajkumar Sharma, Central Member Laxmi Pun, and former Aathbiskot Municipality Mayor Gorkha Bahadur KC are in favor of Sharma.
65 central members from Karnali participated in the seventh plenary meeting of the Maoist party held in Kathmandu last week. Of these, 53 expressed their views in favor of Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, while only former Karnali Chief Minister Rajkumar Sharma was in favor of Sharma.
Most of the Maoist leaders from Karnali were not seen at Sharma's press conference. Almost all the leaders from Sharma's home district of Rukum West, which has about 20 central members, are in favor of party unity.
Sharma is considered the most influential of the former Maoists in Karnali due to his assertive nature, strong decision-making ability, skilled organizer and continuous public approval as a representative. Political analyst Jeevan KC says that 'his influence has weakened now that even the characters he established in politics have left him,' he said. 'Now it seems that he will have to work hard to regain his old dominance.'
Sharma has been continuously elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Rukum West since 2064 BS. Elected four times as an MP, he has also become the Minister of Peace and Reconstruction, Energy, Home and Finance. Sharma was considered the strongest in Karnali even when the party was unified between the UML and the Maoist Center.
Due to his dominance, his counterpart, former Maoist Deputy General Secretary Shakti Bahadur Basnet, was unable to form a group, while Karnali's first Chief Minister Mahendra Bahadur Shahi became the Chief Minister with Sharma's support. Shahi also became active for a long time to strengthen Sharma's group. A Maoist former central member said that Sharma's influence is weakening after Shahi left him.
According to him, the Maoists remained in the Karnali government for about 6 years before and during the current term of the Provincial Assembly. He says that most of the ministers were recommended by Sharma.
The rift between Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Sharma occurred after the eighth general convention held in December 2078. Sharma was an aspirant for the post of General Secretary. But he had to settle for the post of Deputy General Secretary. “Since then, he always had different opinions in party meetings, raising questions against the leadership,” another Maoist former central committee member told Kantipur. “He did not introduce himself as the Deputy General Secretary, and now he has even separated himself from the party. Now his political future depends on the activity of his own campaign.”
