Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwaprakash Sharma has proposed to take a vote from the Mahasamiti members on whether to hold the party's 15th general convention elections before or after the elections.
In a meeting of officials convened by Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka on Saturday, Sharma had proposed to hold the general convention on the occasion of BP Koirala's return home on Poush 17, the day of reconciliation.
Among the four alternative proposals made public by Sharma two days ago, the option of holding a regular general convention from Poush 16-19 was one. This option was discussed on Saturday.
While the establishment party was trying to push the general convention election back under the pretext of the majority in the Central Working Committee, Sharma had proposed another option for a 'voting' of the Mahasamiti members as a way out. This has increased the pressure on the establishment party. The highest body of the party after the general convention in the Congress is the Mahasamiti.
'We can do digital voting within 12 hours to decide whether to go ahead or behind the election.' "If anyone, known or unknown, can come and elect the Prime Minister of the country, it does not mean that the votes of the Congress's Mahasamiti members cannot be obtained," Sharma said. "The party can go to whichever party has the majority in favor through voting."
The establishment side, however, has not responded to that and has maintained its stance that the election and the party's general convention cannot go together. General Secretary Gagan Thapa has warned that he will not attend the Central Working Committee meeting until he is allowed to present the agenda for the general convention before the election. Thapa had boycotted Thursday's meeting.
Friday's meeting was postponed until Sunday, saying that it would reach a consensus. "Discussions are being held between the agenda for Poush 16-19 for a middle-of-the-road agreement. Today has been a bit positive. We have made up our minds to reach an understanding by tomorrow morning and take the agenda to the meeting," Sharma said.
