Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka has held a meeting with General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma to resolve the heated dispute over the schedule of the Congress general convention.
The meeting is scheduled to be held before the start of the Central Working Committee meeting. The meeting has been scheduled for 1 pm.
General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma have been taking the stance that the general convention should be held before the election and the leaders of the establishment party should hold it only after the election. The argument of the general secretaries is that in the new situation after the Gen-G movement, the party cannot win the trust of the people in the election without changing the party's policy and leadership.
General Secretary Thapa had reached Sanepa with the preparation to present the agenda at the meeting on Thursday. However, after Khadka, expressing his group's difficulties in the discussion before the meeting, did not allow him to present the agenda, Thapa got upset and left the meeting venue without even entering the meeting venue. Another general secretary Sharma was also present at the meeting. It is customary for the general secretary to present the agenda in a Congress meeting only with the consent of the president.
However, the establishment party has been arguing that holding the convention before the election would increase divisions within the party and affect the election, arguing that the party convention is not possible before Falgun. They have taken a stand that if the convention schedule is brought now, it should be brought so that the convention can be held in Baisakh.
The Thapa party, on the other hand, is adamant that the schedule should be brought by Mangshir. If the work is not completed by then, they have shown flexibility in extending the time to 15-16 Poush. Another general secretary Sharma had even put forward an option that the convention could be held on the occasion of the return of party founder leader BP Koirala to his home country with a policy of reconciliation.
The establishment party is not ready for that either. Acting President Khadka said that he is trying to unite all parties for greater unity within the party. Efforts are being made to reach an agreement, he said.
Leader Shekhar Koirala has also discussed with his close office bearers the issue of ending the deadlock within the party and bringing about a regular general convention schedule. Koirala held discussions with Vice President Dhanraj Gurung, General Secretaries Thapa and Sharma, and Joint General Secretaries Jeevan Pariyar and Badri Pandey at his liaison office in Bishalnagar this morning.
