Prime Minister Sushila Karki has begun discussions with parties to create an environment for the elections scheduled for 21 Falgun. Although Prime Minister Karki has held informal discussions with political parties, she is set to formally launch the initiative on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Karki has invited seven parties to Baluwatar for election-focused discussions in the first phase. On Tuesday, the Prime Minister's Press Coordinator Ram Rawal informed that he had sent a letter to the nationally recognized parties asking them to send 2 high-level representatives each. Prime Minister Karki will hold election-focused discussions with the Congress, UML, Maoist, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), RPP, Unified Socialist Party and JSP Nepal in the first phase.
Prime Minister Karki is preparing to invite other parties registered with the Election Commission for discussions in the second phase. The Prime Minister's agenda includes discussions with all those who participated in the previous House of Representatives elections and registered after the Election Commission called for party registration. Along with political parties, the Prime Minister will also discuss with former election commissioners, former commissioners, experts with experience in election supervision and civil society, according to the Prime Minister's Secretariat.
The Election Commission has given time for party registration until 30 Kartik. Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal claims that Prime Minister Karki has started such discussions to create an environment for the election while the process of party registration with the commission is underway. 'This is for the election for which the government was formed. We have started preparations for the election from all sides, including the Election Commission,' Aryal said. 'The government has intensified preparations to conduct the election on time, fearlessly and fairly.'
He also urged people not to doubt that the election will be held on time. He claimed that the government is holding discussions with the commission at various stages and that all levels of government, from the President to the Prime Minister, are taking initiatives from their respective positions. 'The government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a fearless election,' Minister Aryal said. 'The government has prepared in terms of peace, security and finances. There is no need to doubt that the government will make any shortfalls in the election.'
The Prime Minister has previously held separate talks with leaders of various levels of various parties. Prime Minister Sushila Karki also held discussions with second-tier leaders of the Maoists a few days ago. She held discussions with Maoists' Narayan Kaji Shrestha and Barshaman Pun in Baluwatar on Friday.
After the failure of political dialogue with the parties after the Gen-G movement, an all-party meeting was held at Sheetal Niwas on the initiative of President Ram Chandra Poudel. Prime Minister Karki had mentioned that discussions with the parties would be taken forward in the meeting. On Saturday, Prime Minister Karki also held election-oriented discussions with the security agencies at Sheetal Niwas. In the discussion, she said that she would take up dialogue with the parties and instructed them to make all security preparations with high morale.
In her meeting with Maoist leaders on Friday, she had expressed the view that the government was committed to holding elections in any case and that the parties should cooperate for this. Since the Maoist leaders had already decided to go to the elections, she had suggested that the environment should be suitable for that.
The parties are expressing concern saying that the security situation is not reliable for the elections at the moment. The President also drew the attention of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to address this concern of the parties last week as it is a major concern. The Prime Minister and the Home Minister had expressed their commitment to create an environment. The Prime Minister had earlier been informally contacting and talking to the second-tier leaders of UML and Congress.
