Pressure on Oli to leave the leadership

What you should know

UML President KP Sharma Oli is under pressure to hand over the leadership. The UML leaders have demanded that Oli should also step down when the pressure to hand over the leadership to the parties is increasing after the Gen-G movement. The central committee meeting of UML, which will be held in the first week of October, has prepared to decide on the convention.

In the secretariat meeting held on Friday in Gundu, Bhaktapur, the leaders said that the leadership should be handed over by holding a convention soon and Oli should be ready for this. In the meeting, Senior Vice President Ishwar Pokharel, Vice Presidents Yuvraj Gyawali, Ashtalakshmi Shakya, Surendra Pandey demanded that the leadership should be handed over from the next convention. Vice-presidents Vishnu Paudel and Ram Bahadur Thapa also held the opinion that after the Gen-G movement, ethical questions about the party leadership should be thought of in a new way.

Senior Vice President Pokharel said that in the changing situation, the party needs to be reorganized in all the areas necessary to move forward in a new way. In the new political situation, the issue of leadership reorganization should be decided after discussion,' he said in the meeting, 'the situation has become new, we cannot move forward with old thinking. Yesterday's decision cannot work. He said that the party can be strengthened only by reorganizing ideas, leadership, and working style.

Vice Presidents Yuvraj Gyawali and Ashtalakshmi Shakya have proposed that the 70-year-old leader should formally leave the leadership. Similarly, the issue of serious weakness of the then government by shooting at the youth during the demonstration when social media was closed was also raised in the meeting. Because of this, since the UML has to leave the government, there is a demand from the leaders that the leadership should be self-critical and hand over the leadership.

The social network that has become a necessity and a habit has suddenly closed. Dissatisfaction arose among the people. The youth who came to the street were killed by the police," Vice President Gyawali said, "The government has failed in this. Self-criticism had to be done. The Prime Minister had to leave. After that, questions have been raised about the party leadership. There has been a voice that the old leader should take a leave.

Vice President Shakya said that there is a voice of change in leadership inside and outside the party, so an exit must be made. "Leadership should exit with respect. Shakya said that there should be an easy exit from within the party. A leader said that Vice President Paudel, who had stood by Oli in the past, said that the party, leadership and organization should be reorganized when the political situation changed. "Now the problem can be solved only by reorganizing the party," he said.

Vice President Pandey said that while UML is leading the government, there should be a serious review of the issue of giving up power on the strength of Gen-G movement. He said that they should accept the shortcomings of the government and the party leadership and proceed on the path of reorganization.

Vice President Guru Baral, Secretary General Shankar Pokharel and Deputy Secretary General Pradeep Gyawali stood by Oli saying that leadership should be protected during times of crisis. After the meeting, Deputy Secretary General Gyawali said that the conference will decide on leadership and succession issues. Some friends are saying that we should move on the path of gradual leadership transfer and generational transition. We have taken care of that," he said. "We have to protect the legacy we have established over the years. In times of crisis, the leadership has to be defended and the sentiments of the people and party workers have to be included. We will address all these issues when we reach the convention. At the beginning of the

meeting, Oli was of the opinion that he still needs to move the party through the crisis. This statement also made it clear that Oli has not yet reached the state of mind to leave the leadership. He has been saying that he will not leave the leadership until his health allows him. The secretariat meeting has been postponed due to Oli being unwell on Saturday.

Even in the past, there was a demand that the UML should not serve more than two terms in the same post and the age limit should be 70 years, but the proposal failed in the Legislative Assembly. According to Oli's wishes, both provisions were removed. The legislative convention held in Lalitpur's Godavari on August 20-22 cleared the way for Oli to become president for the third term.
