What you should know

National Independent Party MP Sovita Gautam has said that the state spends more than 2 billion rupees annually by keeping the prisoners locked up.

She said this at the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee meeting held on Wednesday. According to him, when calculated on the basis of government statistics, the personal food, health, justice and other things of the prisoners are 2.27 billion 44 lakh 8 thousand 164 rupees annually.

The government spent 79 thousand 198 rupees per prisoner last year. There are currently 27,000 prisoners in the country. According to MP Gautam, spending 2 billion annually on detaining people is a huge expense.

She said, 'When I calculated the data given by the government, what is written here is that the annual cost per prisoner is 79 thousand 198 rupees based on the actual expenses incurred last year. Based on this data, if we calculate how many prisoners there are now, our annual expenditure is 2 billion 274 million 8 thousand 164 rupees based on this data. Annual expenses for these prisoners. This is a big expense.'

She said that it is necessary to connect prisoners with production. Noting that so far prisoners have not been involved in production, she said that even the products made by some prisoners have not found the market.

He says that the state should focus on marketing their products by connecting prisoners to production.
