Janata Samajwadi Party Federal Council Chairman Rajendra Shrestha has said that corruption has crossed the border in the country. Addressing the training program of Janata Samajwadi Party in Kathmandu on Saturday, he said that it is necessary to eradicate corruption.
Aiming at Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, he remarked that even though he said that he would not look into the eyes of the corrupt, the work was not progressing accordingly.
He said that the main reason for the increase in corruption is the direct election system. He said that corruption is rampant due to the trend of winning elections by spending crores of rupees and then becoming ministers, chief ministers, parliamentarians, municipal chiefs, and ward presidents. He concluded that corruption has increased because ministers sign policy decisions.
Shrestha said, 'Today, corruption is exceeding the limits in the country. Why corruption happens, that corruption should be eradicated. Many things are said such as not looking into the eyes of a corrupt person. The main reason for this is the electoral system. The problem has been caused by the tendency of those who won by spending crores of rupees in direct elections to collect money at various levels after becoming MPs or ministers. Ministers make the right policy decisions. While implementation is done by staff, it is ministers who give orders. But when there is corruption, it is customary to arrest only the secretary and joint secretary. Decision makers should be held accountable to ensure that leaders do not give wrong orders.'
He mentioned that the leaders were not arrested in incidents like the tape scandal and emphasized that the responsibility structure should be corrected.
Chairman Shrestha targeted former President Bidya Devi Bhandari and said that there is a debate now on whether 'someone will join politics or not'. According to him, it will not matter if one leader changes, but moving forward with an agenda will bring positive results. According to the current parliamentary system, the former president or former vice president cannot join politics.
