The increasing rate of rape-murder in Nepali society is a very frightening mental disorder. The most important issue is to make families and society aware.

The news that you hear/read after waking up in the morning is the horrific rape of girls and women – 14,000 women raped in seven years, 6,363 girls. Why? Is this a sign that society is heading towards heinous crimes?
The news of a fourteen-year-old boy raping and murdering a four-year-old girl, which makes anyone's heart pound. Be it the incident of a 12-year-old girl in Bajhang being raped and murdered and thrown in a temple premises or the incident of a 5-year-old boy in Janakpur being strangled to death after having unnatural sex.
Now, the news of the rape and murder of Inisha Bik has shocked her family and the entire society. Currently, a melodious song is going viral on TikTok – Nachhek Kanchha Nachhek Bato Ghar Jan Aanteko. After the rape incident, the sweetness of this song has lost. Love couples are no longer just making love. While traveling on the roads and in the forest, he raped his teenage girlfriend and gave her death as a gift.
Family and society's involvement in the rape incident
A few years ago, an incident was in the news everywhere. The sexual abuse of a twenty-one-year-old girl from Bajhang by her own family makes us wonder where our society is. The media also reported that the girl was undergoing treatment in a semi-conscious state. Her body was sold and raped by her own father-in-law, husband, mother-in-law, and nephew. They even sterilized her permanently. Poverty, sexual perversion, unconsciousness, or what else helped the families of those families to make such a fool of an innocent woman a member of the family?
This is enough to understand how our society does not hesitate to exploit and sell women's bodies. The structural, traditional patriarchal system and customs continue to promote certain types of sexual violence. Our leadership system is afraid to debate this – men and women are taught that men are stronger than women when it comes to understanding each other. This does not mean that all men are rapists. However, our religious texts, culture and the policies and rules influenced by them discriminate against women, they have made women into sexual objects.
In the view of some people, rape is increasing due to women's short and transparent clothing. They say – what can women do if they are educated? They walk outside without worrying about what they want to wear, and such incidents happen. The idea that rape happens because of marriage is a corrupt idea.
Victims and family members of sexual incidents are threatened by the perpetrators to withdraw the case. And, due to the fear of future stigma and discrimination, the victims are not able to speak openly about the violence of rape after the rape.
Not all victims can move forward with a sense of revenge against the perpetrators. All communities, organizations, women, and men must move forward together against incidents like rape and murder. The root cause of its social structure must also be identified.
Psychological, psychosocial causes of rape
In some cases, the psychosocial and psychological aspects of rape and subsequent murder are also being studied and researched.
Sexual violence can be committed by men against women, men against men, and women against men or women. If we look at incidents around the world, men commit more sexual violence against women. There are social structural aspects of sexual violence committed by men against women or girls. These aspects include a patriarchal society, social concepts of gender, caste discrimination, discrimination, and religion and culture. Again, the psychological and psychosocial aspects of the people living in the same society also play a major role. These various psychological aspects cannot be ignored
. To express such an intention, Dr. Kalyan Subedi has tried to convey a message through his informative video.
A person has a family background from a young age. Children have been observing and learning from a young age the habits of using alcohol and other drugs, the behavior of fathers towards their mothers at home, the behavior of brothers towards their sisters, the behavior of sons and daughters in the neighborhood, and society. Young people and adolescents who are involved in crime have been harassing them in some way or the other. They approach women, touch them, tease them, tell obscene jokes, stare at them, and make obscene gestures. The general lower class community and family are busy earning their livelihood. The children of the family are growing up, but they do not have the time and awareness to pay attention to how they are growing up. Moreover, the sons (and daughters) of divided families, families where there are constant quarrels between husband and wife, and families where alcohol is a problem, especially those in broken families, families where there are constant quarrels between husband and wife, and families where alcohol is a problem, especially those in families, end up following the path of their own family. While participating in these activities, there are many cases where teenagers and young people have been involved in drugs, alcohol, and sexual abuse of women in society.
Discrimination within religious and cultural values is a factor. Dalits and communities below the poverty line are also oppressed and looked down upon by the so-called upper castes and powerful. The arrogance, thinking, and behavior of men who are considered respectable also seem to lead to many incidents in society, including suppression, suppression, and even murder. There are also other psychological aspects of violence such as rape committed under the auspices of social, economic, political, and religious forces, which is why crimes are on the rise.
What can be done to prevent rape incidents?
At the very least, family members should observe the behavior of children from an early age. Even if the family does not pay attention to the behavior of children, neighbors and teachers do observe them. If these things are ignored, there is a high possibility that those children will be involved in crime-oriented activities.
The heinous crimes like rape and murder that are happening day by day in the society have left families and society in mourning. Even when it is known that a criminal who has fallen into the hands of the powerful has committed a crime, there are many cases in our society where even the political power tries to protect that crime. Poverty, deprivation, and ignorance are rampant in the society.
First, society should be developed on the basis of equality and equity. There should be methods and systems that address caste discrimination, gender discrimination,
extreme poverty, and backwardness. Finally, the marginalized sections of society can also be mobilized and they can also read and write, become aware, and distinguish right from wrong. After education and employment, the general public can finally think about the injustice done to them and
speak against it.
The leadership level does not seem to be examining the roots of the society's vices and crimes. The debate is also about hanging rapists. The Nepal government has also made a provision for imprisonment for those who arrange rape cases. However, the provision of lesser punishment for rape of a person above the age of eighteen has raised questions again. Since rape is rape, it seems that the maximum punishment should be given to any age group.
The incidents of rape and murder of young children every day are very painful, but why this is increasing needs to be thoroughly examined. For that, too, there should be studies and research. But when will the state's attention reach that point? In India, criminals have even been sentenced to death, but such incidents have not decreased.
Family members should be aware of what kind of abnormal behavior their children are showing in childhood. And, they should alert them in time, and if they feel a problem, they should seek help from psychologists and health workers. In school education, sex education and abuse and its consequences should be included in the curriculum and taught.
Government and non-governmental organizations should also conduct programs to spread widespread public awareness about child sexual abuse, its long-term effects and legal remedies. Since alcohol, cigarettes, khaini, and drugs also increase the incidence of such sexual crimes in society, local bodies, police, and social organizations should actively work to ban their use.
This can be reduced by fully complying with the laws in force and taking action against all those who conspire or facilitate rape cases. In Nepali law, after a criminal is put in jail, there is a practice of adding two 24-hour days, counting the days and nights, which increases the possibility of those who have been sentenced being released early and committing crimes again. Murder after rape is a very dangerous mental disorder. Therefore, the most important issue is to make the family and society aware.
