The positive message given by the unity of alternative forces

What you should know

Ravi Lamichhane, President of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), who became the fourth force in the House of Representatives through the 2079 elections, and Balendra Shah, who became the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, have merged into a single political force. The dialogue between Lamichhane and Shah, which has been intense for about a week, gained significance on Monday.

The changed political situation after the Gen-G movement has brought these two parties together. As a unified force, they have tried to bring the upcoming election and the subsequent scenario under their leadership, which is natural in a democratic system.

This has also created a political atmosphere for the upcoming election, and the competition and results in the election are expected to be more interesting. For the new power to succeed as it wants, more clarity on political and social issues, hard work, and honesty towards consensus are also indispensable.

In the 2079 local level elections, voters sent a clear message by electing Balendra in Kathmandu, Harak Sampang in East Dharan, and Gopal Hamal in West Dhangadhi - voters are now ready to make independent decisions by shedding the burden of faith in their own party. However, in the House of Representatives elections held in Mangsir that same year, the new party, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), became the fourth largest party with 20 seats. Later, its number of seats increased to 21 through by-elections.

In the House of Representatives, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has participated in the government twice for short periods in the past three years. The fact that two parties that are popular among the new generation stand together is an encouraging issue for supporters. In addition, democracy also becomes dynamic when political parties, organizations, groups or individuals who consider themselves close to them stand together. This brings voters together, increases the chances of victory and helps in implementing the agenda. In addition, it also inspires competing politicians to unite with their close forces. Overall, it contributes to qualitative change in politics.

In fact, Balendra had the opportunity to become the Prime Minister in the vacuum and vacancy created between the Gen-G movement of 23 Bhadau and the events of 24 Bhadau. But he proposed the name of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki and got it approved by the President. At this time, he has come to mainstream politics from party politics. After joining mainstream politics and aspiring to be elected by the people and becoming the Prime Minister, he also has challenges ahead of him.

In a democracy, it is entirely appropriate for individuals or groups like him to try for an opportunity to work after being tested by the people. Similarly, after the Gen-G movement, there is a search for newness in politics as a whole. The debate on generational transfer and handover is intense within the old parties. There is a desire for the arrival of a new generation in politics as well. The unity between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Balen also strengthens that debate within the old parties.

The fourth point of the seven-point agreement states that Lamichhane will remain the central president of the RSS and Balen will be the leader of the parliamentary party and the future prime ministerial candidate after the upcoming House of Representatives elections. This is also the point that has attracted the attention of many. In elections held under the parliamentary system, it is also a positive step for any party to participate in the elections by designating a prime ministerial candidate.

With such an exercise, if a party or coalition wins the election and gets the opportunity to become the prime minister, there will be no confusion about who will become the prime minister, such confusion has plagued our politics in the past. Secondly, voters also know in advance who will be made the Prime Minister with their votes and can make a wise decision. They get the opportunity to evaluate the political acumen, agenda and efficiency of the person concerned. Thirdly, it creates pressure on all the parties that are competitors and have the aspiration and potential to lead the government in the future to participate in the election by nominating a Prime Ministerial candidate.

It is not possible to determine right now what size of force the RSVP will become in the upcoming election, and whether its size will have the ability to make Balen the Prime Minister or not. Because, the sovereign voters have yet to use their discretion. Therefore, the expectation that can be made at this time is honesty towards the consensus. In the past, elections have been held without nominating a Prime Ministerial candidate, either declared or undeclared. At that time, the country has suffered political instability because even the party that achieved success in the election could not respect the people's vote.

In the 2056 general election, the Congress had nominated Krishna Prasad Bhattarai as the Prime Ministerial candidate. That is also the reason, the Congress got a single majority and Bhattarai also became the Prime Minister. But his own party did not allow him to become Prime Minister for even a year. The UML and the Maoists had united to form a powerful NCP based on an alliance formed before the 2074 elections, but due to the mutual intrigue of the leaders, KP Sharma Oli's government collapsed prematurely and the country had to face an unimaginable political period.

Therefore, achieving the expected success in the elections is not the only achievement, but understanding and mutual respect are the biggest issues. To prevent such adversity, the new forces should pay attention to such historical injuries in a timely manner. In that, the concerned parties and Nepali politics as a whole are in the best interest.
