When will the cholera caused by lack of sanitation stop?

What you should know

After 10 years, cholera infection has spread again in Birganj. By Sunday evening, more than 150 suspected patients have been admitted to various hospitals for treatment. So far, 3 people have died due to diarrhea, 9 people are being treated in ICU and 70 people are being treated in HDU. Various hospitals in Birganj are full of suspicious patients.

The District Crisis Management Committee has allocated dedicated beds and managed manpower for treatment. The district coordination committee meeting held on Saturday has decided to adopt all measures including raising awareness and mobilizing health workers for infection control. Federal Water Minister Pramod Yadav has reached Birgunj and has mobilized a team with a mobile van for water testing from the department after getting information about the situation. The local level has also distributed Piyush for water purification.

The local level has also decided to close schools for 2 days as cholera can take the form of an epidemic. Also, food items sold openly like panipuri, chaat, chatpaty etc. have also been banned. Birgunj Metropolitan Municipality held a meeting with the hospitals there on Saturday and instructed wards 1 to 16 to be prepared as risk wards and 11, 12, 13 and 16 to keep manpower, medicine and ambulances in readiness. The Metropolitan Municipality has decided to activate the hub satellite network to give priority to diarrhea patients and mobilize 24 hours help desk and information center and 25 teams of health workers.

According to America's Center for Disease Control and Prevention, where there is no adequate sanitation and drinking water system, various infectious diseases such as diarrhea and cholera spread rapidly from the feces of infected people. According to the World Health Organization, the rate of diarrhea can be halved if you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching dirt, cooking and eating. There is no doubt that the spread of diarrhea or cholera in urban areas means that the water source is contaminated. In this case, the risk seems to increase even more if you do not pay attention to personal hygiene.

Cholera is a serious disease caused by an intestinal infection with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Cholera bacteria enter the body of a healthy person through contaminated food and contaminated water and rapidly infect the intestines. Intestinal cells begin to release excess water and stools begin to look like clay. Blood pressure drops with rapid loss of body fluids and the patient becomes severely unconscious. According to various verified statistics, 1 out of every 20 people infected with cholera is severely disabled. It can kill even a healthy adult within hours.

It is found that 80 percent of patients who develop cholera symptoms have only normal diarrhea. But if not treated in time, 50 percent of patients with serious infections are at risk of death. About 80 percent of cholera infected are treated with ORS or life water, salt, sugar, water.

If the condition is severe due to vomiting, saline water and other medicines are also given to balance the amount of water and minerals in the body. Antibiotics are also given to the patient depending on the condition. According to the World Health Organization, the mortality rate of cholera remains below one percent if appropriate and appropriate treatment is provided.

For cholera control, the excrement of the patient should be brought near the water source or in a random cesspool. Utensils should be cleaned with boiling water before use, especially in places where the infection has spread. Clothes should also be washed with boiling water. Food should be protected from flies. Don't eat moldy, stale, rotten, uncooked, moldy food. Hands should be washed with soap and water after defecation, before and after meals. Food should be properly cooked at home. Regardless of the source and spring water, it is advisable to wash hands and use water after boiling it for at least 5 minutes or disinfecting it with chlorine tablets.
