Role of Chemical Engineering in Petroleum Exploration

If the government, encouraged by the confirmation of the existence of petroleum products, works very actively in its production and storage, then our generation can use not only the petroleum of Dailekh, the iron ore of Dhowadhi and the uranium of Chure Bhawar area, but also many mines that are yet to be confirmed.

After the Chinese team submitted the preliminary report that there are 112 billion cubic meters of natural gas in Dailekh's aquifers and it will last for 50 years for Nepal, the entire country is now excited. This fact came out after the geological study of the China Geological Survey, a government agency of China, and the lab test of the sample obtained by drilling to a depth of 4,000 meters from May 28, 2080, by China's CNPC Sibu Engineering Company.

After the confirmation of the presence of petroleum mines in Dailekh, studies and analysis from various angles have started and with that, the need and importance of chemical engineering in Nepal has come to the surface once again.

Although chemical engineering is a new subject in the context of Nepal, it is more than a century old subject for the countries that are emerging in the world through the industrial revolution. Countries that are rich in petroleum and other fuels are currently becoming the first in the world economy through the use of chemical technology.

B.S. at Kathmandu University in Nepal. From 2072 and at Tribhuvan University B.Sc. Chemical engineering program is in operation since 2076. Also, many Nepalis have been studying chemical engineering under the Colombo Plan since almost 3 decades. Currently, Nepal Engineering Council has about

250 chemical engineers are registered and they are also working at the highest level of the government system. The role of chemical engineer is also important in sustainable development by finding safe methods for industry, production, pollution control and resource conservation.

Discovery and confirmation of many mineral resources in different parts of the country including petroleum mines in Dailekh, iron mines in Dhawadhi, uranium mines in Chure Bhavar is a pleasure in itself. Although it is confirmed that there are resources of these types of minerals in Nepal, there is not much emphasis on their processing and commercial production.

Also, according to a study conducted by the Nepal government in 1980, gas was found at a depth of 20 to 330 meters in some areas of Kathmandu and Lalitpur, and it was said that if it was commercially produced, it would reach 50 years according to the demand of the valley at that time. But unfortunately that report was also limited to a report and could not be a commercial product.

The natural gas said to be found in Dailekh's aquifers is methane. Methane is formed from one carbon and four hydrogen molecules. Methane occurs naturally within petroleum formations, from the decomposition of organic matter, and in gas wells and coal mines. This colorless and odorless gas is highly flammable. Methane gas is a cheaper, cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel than petrol or diesel. Methane gas can be used as fuel in vehicles, to generate electricity, to be sent through pipelines to homes for cooking, and also for lighting household purposes.

Steam methane reforming uses high temperatures and water vapor to convert methane gas into hydrogen and carbon dioxide. From Nepal's perspective, hydrogen gas obtained from methane reforming can be used to produce ammonia gas.

Ammonia gas is a major source of chemical fertilizers. Hydrogen and carbon dioxide obtained from the use of methane gas play an important role in urea production.

Currently, the government has prioritized the industry related to chemical fertilizer production and since Nepal Oil Corporation is also working on it, this project seems to be multi-useful in terms of economy if it can produce chemical fertilizer and urea by using this methane. Similarly, methane to methanol can be commercially produced and used as biofuel.

Chemical engineers and engineering techniques are used globally in petroleum exploration, processing and storage. Since the number of chemical engineers in Nepal is relatively low and manpower is not available when demanded, it seems that the work is being done through human resources, but now as chemical engineers are being produced professionally, it is essential to use these manpower in such works.

Since the amount of carbon is very high, chemical engineers play an important role in finding ways to process it without harming the environment, increasing production, identifying new technologies and using them.

In Saudi Aramco, the world's largest petroleum processing industry, more than 50 percent of the total skilled workforce are chemical engineers. In addition, a large number of chemical engineers are employed in the petroleum industry of India, China, America, Kuwait, Qatar and other countries.

This can also be understood about the role and importance of chemical engineers in petroleum exploration. It is also a necessity today to move towards its commercial production by using chemical engineers who are produced in the country and who have returned from abroad with higher education.

If the government, excited by the confirmation of the presence of petroleum, will work very actively in its production and storage, then our generation can use not only the petroleum of Dailekh, the iron ore of Dhowadhi and the uranium of the Chure Bhawar region, but also many mines that are yet to be confirmed.
