Pilgrimage to memory

A tireless warrior of Nepal's democratic movement, one of the founding members of the Nepal Vidyarthi Sangh, an organization that has been struggling for a hundred years not to quench the flame of democracy, the former chairman of the Congress Kathmandu district working committee and former minister Tirthram Dangol passed away on the 13th of Baisakh at the age of 75 at his home in Kuleshwar, Kathmandu, due to cancer and diabetes.

Due to two or three serious illnesses, Dangol had been struggling with very poor health for a few years. which limited his political activism significantly.

Similarly, in the recent period, the relevance of a simple-hearted, clean, self-respecting and ethical person like Tirtharam in the Congress party has almost ended.

In the light of the kind of self-centeredness, narrow-mindedness and factionalism that has prevailed in the thinking, culture, working style and decision-method of the current leadership of that historic party called Congress, it has become natural that Tirthrams become without a role. Even though  The

happened exactly like that. Teerthram was removed from his role within the organization and pushed into the darkness of obscurity forever. He himself was tired of seeing the theoretical and moral deviations in the party, so he voluntarily kept himself apart not only from the Congress Kathmandu District Committee, but also from the national political scene.

Dangol, who was born in a traditionalist farmer (Zapu) family that has nothing to do with politics, has taken the difficult path of the principled politics of the banned political organization Congress, which is aiming to restore democracy, and has established its presence on the big board of national politics.

His height of personality is self-made in true sense. He achieved that height as a result of his special attachment to education, intensive study of literature and the right steps taken after a deep analysis of the economic-social-political situation of the country. With fatherly determination he followed the thorny path of opposition politics that the Congress was doing at that time.

He did not participate in the risky process of the democratic movement like some other leaders-activists of the Congress or the Communist Party by leaning or taking part in lahailai. It was the path of struggle that he deliberately chose.

After passing the SLC examination, his admission to Trichandra College for higher education became the reason for turning his life journey towards a new path. It was a time when the country was plunged into the darkness of totalitarianism. Diss. Trichandra College was the only place in the country where students used to raise their voices against the authoritarian state system and its heroes during that dark time when King Mahendra, who had become sovereign, once again made the Nepalese citizens voiceless by killing him on 1st December 2017.

The students there were ideologically divided into democratic and left-wing camps, but they always stood together on the issue of opposition to the king's autocratic rule. In the case of Tirthram Dangol, it was a happy coincidence that he must have been led by destiny to join the democratic camp.

While still studying at Trichandra College, he became close to the ardent democratic student-leaders of that time - Shiv Bahadur Khadka, Sher Bahadur Deuba, Marshal Zulum Shakya, Daman Dhungana, Bipin Koirala, Devendra Nepali, Machindra Pathak etc. Dhyan Gobind Ranjit, who became Teerthram's colleague on several occasions, and the line writer were his fellow students.

As the student department of the Congress Party, Teerthram, who has become an influential member of the democratic students' group before the formal formation of the Nepal Vidyarthi Sangh. He was one of the founding members of the Navy Association when it was established on 6th Baisakh, 2027. And, on that occasion, the Panchayat administration arrested him for the first time, detained him for a few days and released him.

Navy Association was inaugurated by Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, the only big Congress leader who was in Kathmandu at that time. At the same time, Krishna Prasad took notice of Teerthram. Later in the year 2034, when the Kathmandu District Working Committee of the banned Congress Party was formed, Bhattarai nominated Theertharam as the treasurer of that working committee.

That working committee was formed under the chairmanship of Birnath Karmacharya. Later, Teerthram was also elected as the Chairman of Kathmandu District Working Committee of Congress.

The first important turning point in the political life of Tirthram, who had been under arrest for about 4 years, came in the year 2044, when the Congress, which was about to participate in the elections of local bodies under the strategy of capturing the outposts of the Panchayat, made him a candidate for the post of Deputy Pradhan Panchayat of Kathmandu Nagar Panchayat.

The popular leader Ganeshman Singh, who has been given full authority to nominate candidates in Kathmandu by the party, nominated Haribol Bhattarai for the Pradhan Panch and Teerthram Dangol for the Deputy Pradhan Panch. The duo of Jaisibahun Haribol Bhattarai from Kanthkshetra and Jaipu Teerthram Dangol from the city defeated the candidates of both Panch and Communist parties by a huge margin.

Out of about 35 thousand Japu voters in Kathmandu metropolis, a good majority voted in favor of the well-educated, qualified and honest son of their community and his friends. Tirthram Dangol passed MA from Tribhuvan University.

The pair of Haribol and Tirthram could not run the municipal administration of Kathmandu for long. Both of them were suspended because they boycotted Shri 5 Mahendra and Panchayati Constitution Day, which was celebrated on 1st of January every year by Panchas, saying that it was the day of killing of democracy.

As a person who closely watched the 8-month tenure of Bhattarai and Dangol, I can confidently say that they did a good job despite the lack of cooperation from the central government and almost all the ward members of the Nagar Panchayat.

Especially for the SAARC Summit, the high level of cleaning work done by the Nagar Panchayat employees under the leadership of Teerthram was commendable. As the Press Advisor of the Nagar Panchayat, I was very impressed with the professional competence of Tirthram Dangol, who was associated with that team.

In 2056, Teerthram, who became the health minister after winning the election of the House of Representatives from Kathmandu, performed his duties and responsibilities there with skill and honesty.

Teerthram An episode mentioned by him in his book titled 'Kathmandu Congress and Teerthram' reflects the tendency of Nepali leaders. He has said - "No matter how many countries I have visited, those countries were not created by God, they were created by human beings. Made by leaders. The people's trust and confidence in the leaders' ambitions is made up. In other words, it is made of self-power. Made by leadership ability and planning. Our leaders sometimes say they will make the country Switzerland, sometimes Singapore, but until today no one has said they will make Nepal.'
