Take the road with accountability, not resistance

Democracy is weak within pro-republican parties like Congress, UML, Maoists or Unified Socialists. Republic has not yet come and federalism has not been practiced. It is contradictory to say that a party that cannot develop and flourish democracy, republic or federalism within itself will take to the streets and defend the same agenda.

At present, most of the mainstream political parties are reaching the streets with campaigns and agitation programs. In a democracy, it is natural for political parties to be active, campaign, take to the streets, demonstrate or present their agenda in a peaceful manner.

Such programs become a bridge of direct dialogue between political parties and people. Although there are many positive aspects of the parties in advancing their programs, there is a different dimension in the advancement of the present time. Are the parties taking to the streets to convey their agenda or to counter such and such power and agenda? Does it strengthen democracy or just the politics of reaction? Will the party in power do its communication through service delivery or through the road? In the light of such questions, it is the responsibility of the citizens to examine the program of the party. It helps to make the party responsible and restrained.

Now the forces on the streets are mainly divided into two sides. Congress, UML, Maoists and United Socialists are setting a program for the strengthening of the federal republic and federalism and defense of the constitution. Out of this, the Congress has gathered in regional conferences. The UML led by the government is preparing to hold a street demonstration from 11th Chait. The main opposition Maoist has resumed the 'Tarai Madhesh Jagran Abhiyan' which was started from Jhapa on February 12. Integrated socialist for "good governance and employment, preparation for socialism"

has announced a two-phase movement. On the other hand, the campaign to bring back the monarchy has started under the leadership of Navraj Subedi, the former president of Rashtriya Panchayat as the representative of the king. Around this agenda, RPP has formed a movement core committee under the coordination of chairman Rajendra Lingden. The party is preparing to hold a movement centered on Kathmandu in March and April.

In a democracy, the right of the party to convey its agenda to the people has been protected by the constitution itself. All sections of society can question the relevance of any party's agenda. If parties and powers with the agenda of seeking 'lordship' by abandoning the use of democratic rights devalue their own civil rights, that is their problem. But other political parties should respect everyone's right to take their agenda to the people in a peaceful manner as a political force. The same logic applies not only to the RPP, but to all individuals or groups that are integrated into the same agenda.

The comment that the Republic is threatened by its opponents cannot be considered correct. Because the supreme authority in a republic is the citizen himself. Instead, the style and behavior adopted by the parties and powers that represent it can become a threat to the republic. Even now, this system has to bear criticism due to leaders, parties and public institutions. The challenge to this republic is not theoretical but practical. To which the parties should answer with accountability. Forgetting that natural path, they have moved towards the program of agitation against monarchist parties, institutions and individuals.

It seems that the mainstream party has forgotten its main responsibility. For example, if the UML under the leadership of the government can set an example of how a democratic party and government should work and style, instead of setting a program to take to the streets, the republic will be stronger.

When Congress, UML or Maoists led the government, who has stopped promoting the fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution? Who has not cooperated in ending the corruption and injustice that make the citizens suffer? Who has hindered job creation? Who is responsible for providing services to the people? As the parties leading the government in turn are proving to be incompetent in their core responsibilities, there is less chance of getting the expected support if they embark on a program to divert the public's attention.

Democracy is weak within pro-republican parties like Congress, UML, Maoists or United Socialists. Republic has not yet come and federalism has not been practiced. It is paradoxical to say that a party which cannot develop and flourish democracy, republic or federalism within itself will take to the streets and defend the same agenda.

parties should go to the public with accountability, not resistance. Parties should go with their core responsibilities and accountability even on the road. Their campaign will be counterproductive if they can't tell the people openly what power they have to come to the streets to find.
