Nepali incarnation of populism

Now, efforts are being made to create a comment that 'nothing happened in the country'. The development and changes that have taken place so far are self-inflicted, they are nothing and the things that could not be done are the main ones.

Of course, no matter how much work has been done, the countries that have just gained independence when we got democracy yesterday have left us far behind in terms of development and prosperity. However, to say that nothing has happened in Nepal in the meantime is dishonest to own past, positive efforts and motherland.

More specifically, by showing two-four plans, it is said that 'good work could not be done after the advent of the democracy-republic, but things were done yesterday during the reign of the king'. Yesterday, when there was nothing to do, even the tasks that were done will automatically appear. Until Tribhuvan Airport was built, there was no airport in Nepal, there was no road until the East-West Highway was built, places like Pokhara and Hetaunda were not connected by road.

So whatever works were done at that time, they automatically became milestones. However, today there are more works than him. The average life expectancy of the people has increased, the literacy rate and access to education is remarkable, there is an unprecedented spread of communication networks, road networks have extended to villages, per capita income has increased, citizens have increased access to health services, business promotion is good, and there is an increase in production and employment opportunities.

has progressed today in almost all areas. Even if we talk about numbers, no progress has been made less than yesterday in any field, it is not likely to happen. The difference is that yesterday was a closed society, citizens had no access to the inner workings of rulers, questioning was forbidden and only their best avatars were brought out. Today there is an open society, the society rejoices in the vandalism of everyone. That's why it is easy to portray the good of yesterday and the bad of today.

There is an attempt to create anger by spreading frustration and despair in the society from two angles: first, from the monarchists who are against the republican system and second, from the populists who aim to bake their bread by creating instability in politics. On the contrary, even though the royalists do not have the inner belief that the Ganges can be swept away, they are under the illusion that they can hold the tail of the dead monarchy and spread the tide of politics.

For that, they are wondering whether the environment will be created only by defaming the current system and the leader. That's why even if there is a bus accident somewhere, they are quick to say, 'See, we told you that this will happen in the republic.' Becoming a ruler based on birth, even if such a ruler is eccentric, even if he destroys his own family, the recognition that citizens should accept from a sovereign citizen is nothing but backward and backwards thinking.

Knowing that the fictional king/queen of developed countries is not relevant to us at all, it is said that 'development has taken place in countries with monarchies'. One thing is for sure, if the Federal Democratic Republic fails, then another radical alternative, born and buried in Aryaghat, will return to the monarchy is like saying that dead parents come alive after doing penance. So there is no point in trying to glorify the past and distort the present.

When creating the comment that 'nothing happened in the country', it ultimately benefits the populists. The conclusion that the achievements so far are nothing, yesterday was good, today nothing will strengthen neither the democracy nor the country.

As this creates extreme frustration in the people, their political conscience is confused and the benefit is taken by a character who talks cheaply, insults others, has no definite principles of his own and assures that he can do everything, like comedian and TV presenter Vladimir Zelensky in Ukraine. There may be a different analysis of the Russia-Ukraine war, but taking advantage of the political instability, agitation and chaos that has repeatedly appeared in Ukraine

There is a strong opinion that if Zelensky, who entered politics before the 2019 elections, had not been elected president, Ukraine would not have experienced a long war. Zelensky entered politics only on the eve of the presidential election, running a television program called "Servant of the People". He is a model of populism, who won on the basis of politics through television, since coming to the leadership, Ukraine has lost millions of soldiers and 20 percent of its territory.

The main characteristic of populists is to get people's attention by talking unproven and cheap. It is populism to say that the parties and their leaders who fought for democracy, made the constitution and won the trust of the people are nothing and those who did not break any sin for the country, who started politics by insulting others, who themselves got into many controversies and who do not carry any ideology, are angels for the people.

Born in Europe in the 19th century, flourished in Latin America and is now expanding, small and large countries are being hit by populism. The main characteristic of populism is to divide the citizens of the entire country into two parts, either for or against them, and touch their hearts on cultural, economic-social or non-institutional issues. Speaking not on what is right, but on the basis of what the most people prefer, brings joy to each other.

When Donald Trump evicts illegal immigrants from the US and suspends the aid being distributed through the USAD for 90 days, it is possible to understand what populism does. Trump, who came to power with the slogan of 'America First' for the first time and 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) for the second time, is devaluing the values that America is raising by making decisions based on his voters.

Just as Trump is centering white-populism, Narendra Modi is centering Hindu-populism in neighboring India. Today, populism is working to make the leaders and powers that teach the world about globalization, liberalism, human rights, democracy, open market economy, personal freedom and label alternative ideology as authoritarianism more and more liberal.

Of course there are many reforms to be done in Nepal, the expectations of the citizens have not been met. When the number of citizens who have studied, worked, at least seen those countries, returned after working abroad and gained knowledge due to education is increasing rapidly, it is not unusual to ask why the same system as there is not in their country. Due to the size of our economy, location between two big neighbors, frequent political instability, lack of long-term planning, lack of structural reforms, some of the things that should be done are not being done.

If a small construction project is delayed, the contractor hires a man to file a lawsuit and the project is stuck for years. Nepal has demanded a major structural reform in order to solve these issues as a whole. Not only one person, agency and official, but the whole system will not be done unless the system is radically organized, questions will be raised and protests will continue to exist.

The leaders who are leading the decision-making level of the state have given more strength to the populists when they speak freely for cheap popularity. For example, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Chairman of CPN (Maoist Center), who has led the country three times and still runs saying "I will do it if I get it", does not fail to say "corruption in the purchase of wide body aircraft" when accusing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

However, the reality is different - the entire process of purchasing aircraft was completed when Dahal himself was the Prime Minister. When the notice was published on October 10, 2073, the Ministry of Finance approved the government guarantee on October 29, the agreement on the purchase and sale of aircraft was signed on January 3, the $10 million bond was signed on January 28, the aircraft purchase agreement was issued on March 25, and the government of Nepal decided to guarantee the government on April 7, 2074.

and bringing the plane after paying the amount according to the agreement, while pointing one finger at Oli that there is corruption, it seems that he is pointing four fingers at himself. The stories of Yeti, Omni, Giribandhu, Widebody, etc., from the 32 billion investment misinformation in the market that was propagated in the market, are part of efforts to create 'space' for populists by discrediting established parties and leaders.

There are states, there are state agencies. KP Oli is in power now. Yesterday, when there was a government other than CPN (UML) under the leadership of Pushpa Kamal Dahal, it would have been appropriate to say it now if they had investigated the matter. Now, when he tries to open the file of corruption, there is no positive meaning hidden behind the cry that was removed except to gain cheap popularity.

There is unrest, corruption, chaos in the country. Also, there is the state apparatus. In a multi-party system, no single party remains in power. Such irregularities have also been investigated. Speakers, Deputy Prime Ministers, Ministers, MPs, Secretaries, Mayors have been jailed and retired from politics. Without mentioning the other side of the coin, will the morale of the working bodies be raised by preaching that action will not be taken against anyone? Will citizens develop a positive attitude towards the state system? What is surprising is that intellectuals, professors, professionals, etc., who have benefited from the old parties at different times and are now dissatisfied, seem to be involved in creating such commentary.

The alternative to democracy is neither monarchy nor populism. Ravi Lamichhane and Balen Shah's efforts to deify Ravi Lamichhane and Balen Shah, despite their young faces on the screen, are many behind the scenes. The efforts of internal and external elements that are going to make the country, which has been independent, sovereign and living with self-respect since history, more weak, unstable and dilapidated, are being concentrated here.

For that purpose, discrediting the established party and leader by running disinformation campaign, influencing the citizens by giving a list of things that could not be done, overshadowing the things that have been done, causing frustration and anger in the citizens and filling the empty spaces by themselves, the global avatar of populism is manifesting in Nepal.
