When our political leaders give speeches or media reports, they say that 'corruption is the country's cancer', as if cancer is a voluntary disease like corruption. In particular, corruption is an unethical practice, a social and economic evil, and those involved in such acts should be discouraged and punished.
On the other hand, cancer is a specific physical adversity, its patients need encouragement. But our society is still not sensitive to the effect on the self-esteem of a person who is actually struggling with cancer when an economic or social malaise is directly called cancer. Moreover, when the leaders of the society link corruption and cancer together, it is also found that other common people learn the same. Therefore, there is a need for a meaningful debate and awareness about the use of the image of cancer and the treatment of its patients.
When people say cancer, people come to the conclusion - it is not usually safe, but it costs a lot, and it needs to be treated for a long time. Sympathy is showered for the patient by narrating similar conclusions. In some cases, even the patient himself is kept secret about the disease. Not only from the family and society, but also from the treating health workers, they are disappointed that the chances of recovery are low. The family, health workers and the entire system of society together weaken the patient mentally. Patients are more distressed by the fear created by the people around them than by the pain of the disease. The struggle of a patient with low self-esteem is automatically difficult. Cancer is also a disease, science and technology have been developing treatment methods, many people have become complacent, but there is a need for encouraging practice that requires correct treatment and high morale. For this, not only the treatment of the patient, but also the behavior directly/indirectly has a great meaning. Cancer patients need encouragement, not sympathy, just like any other patient, to give them courage in their struggle.
Every year more than 20,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in Nepal. Also, 11.11 percent of the total deaths are due to cancer. Therefore, the government should decide an effective strategy to detect cancer at an early stage and facilitate treatment. Nepal has the highest rates of lung cancer, cervical cancer and female breast cancer. A 'screening program' can be conducted to detect cancer at an early stage. If it can be made free and reach local level, participation will increase. This ultimately saves not only the citizens but also the government. Second, the treatment is easy. It also increases the chances of getting sick. Likewise, the HPV vaccine given to girls above 14 years of age and under 15 years of age should be expanded so that women do not get cervical cancer. If it can be made mandatory and carried out as a campaign, participation will also increase. Results will also be obtained. The program to discourage the consumption of tobacco, which is considered to be the cause of cancer, should be carried forward in an effective manner. A healthy and orderly lifestyle should be encouraged.
Overall, cancer treatment is expensive. Middle class families are pushed into poverty. Therefore, the role of the state in its treatment is expected. However, the federal government supports one lakh rupees for cancer treatment. State and local governments also announce support programs. Most people start treatment at their local health facility. They start taking the usual medicines that are available from there. When they are not satisfied, they go to a hospital with higher facilities. Not everyone does this, but this is the process/obligation of many. After many stages of treatment and a lot of expenses, the person concerned reaches the cancer diagnosis hospital and finds out that he is a cancer patient. Only then will their special treatment begin. Only on the basis of the cancer confirmation information given by the hospital, they get a recommendation from the local level and receive support worth one lakh for treatment. As compared to the expenses incurred for the treatment of cancer patients, the support received from the government is less, so additional support is mandatory. It may not be practical for the government or other organizations to increase the aid amount individually. Hence, it can be bundled with health insurance. For that, the premium and facilities can be increased as compared to now. The government has taken the initiative, but it is expected that the decision will not be delayed.
