Japanese Ambassador to Nepal, Maeda Toru, has described the achievement of the Nagdhunga–Sisnekhola tunnel as a historic moment in Nepal’s infrastructure development and a strong link in Nepal–Japan friendship.
At the inauguration ceremony on Monday, he said that the ‘breakthrough’ of the tunnel in the very year marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Japan held special significance. He expressed his belief that the Nagdhunga tunnel would serve as a gateway for Nepal’s economic development and that cooperation between the two countries would deepen further in the future.
Located at the main gateway connecting Kathmandu to Dhading and Pokhara, this tunnel will ease the transportation of goods and services by saving time and reducing traffic disruptions caused by difficult geographical conditions. Ambassador Toru said that this would not only improve the living standards of local communities but also make a significant contribution to energizing the national economy.
He noted that despite landslides and ground movement during the monsoon, the project succeeded due to the experience of Japanese experts and the tireless efforts of Nepali technicians and workers. He said that the technical knowledge from the more than 15,000 tunnels built by Japan was applied in this project, and the Japanese government believes that Nepali engineers have gained important experience in technical skills and safety standards from it.
Expressing solidarity with Nepal’s democratic process and development goals, Ambassador Toru also pledged Japan’s continued support for Nepal’s stability and prosperity.
