After a clash between two groups in Dewanganj, Sunsari, which resulted in one death, political parties, people's representatives, and the administration have appealed to all sides to maintain peace, restraint, and social harmony.
Following the incident, an indefinite curfew has been imposed in some areas of Dewanganj and Harinagar rural municipalities, and the Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a five-member committee to investigate the facts of the incident.
After the incident, appeals to maintain peace, harmony, and restraint have been issued in various sectors. The Saptari administration has also urged everyone to uphold mutual harmony and religious tolerance.
The District Administration Office issued a notice on Friday, stating that it has taken serious note of activities such as spreading misleading rumors on social media regarding recent incidents in other districts, inciting hatred, making speeches, and making indecent comments targeting each other's religion, beliefs, culture, or community, which could harm social harmony. The notice stated that it is everyone's shared responsibility to maintain mutual harmony, peace, security, public order, and the beautiful identity of the district, which is characterized by its multi-ethnic, multilingual, and multi-religious features.
“We sincerely appeal to all citizens, religious leaders, civil society, intellectuals, journalists, and all stakeholders to maintain mutual unity, harmony, tolerance, and brotherhood among citizens of various castes, languages, religions, and communities within the district,” said Chief District Officer Shyam Krishna Thapa in a statement.
Minister Mehta’s Appeal
Expressing sorrow over the incident in Dewanganj, Sunsari, Minister for Health and Food Hygiene Nisha Mehta has appealed to everyone to maintain peace, restraint, and social harmony.
Minister Mehta offered heartfelt condolences to those who lost their lives in the incident and expressed sympathy to the bereaved families. She also wished the injured a speedy recovery, and her secretariat stated that necessary coordination is underway for their treatment. Minister Mehta urged all citizens not to believe any unverified information or rumors in this sensitive situation and to refrain from activities that could harm social harmony and mutual brotherhood. She expressed confidence that the relevant authorities would conduct an impartial investigation and make the facts public as soon as possible.
Attention Drawn to the Home Minister
A team led by Rastriya Swatantra Party Whip Prakash Chandra Pariyar met with Home Minister Sudhan Gurung and drew his attention to the need for an independent investigation into the incident. The team also called for attention to security sensitivities for peace, security, and public order, and appealed for social-religious harmony and mutual tolerance.
The team urged leaders and stakeholders from both communities and sides to maintain restraint, peace, and social harmony, and to seek solutions through dialogue. Pariyar said, “In such sensitive times, let us all strive to maintain utmost restraint, mutual harmony, and social unity. Let us stay away from unverified information and rumors, and trust only in the truth and legal process.”
After the incident, leaders of various political parties and people's representatives have given different reactions. Nepali Congress Central Committee member Rajiv Koirala has demanded that the government conduct an impartial investigation and bring the culprits to justice. He emphasized the need to maintain social harmony and make the facts public.
Similarly, Lal Bikram Thapa, House of Representatives member from the same area representing Rastriya Swatantra Party, accused the police of deliberately shooting and killing a citizen. He has demanded a high-level investigation into the incident and strict action against those responsible.
Leader of the main opposition Nepali Congress parliamentary party, Bhishmaraj Angdembe, also called for an impartial investigation, stating that violence, arson, vandalism, and retaliation will not solve any problems, and urged all sides to exercise restraint. He said that security personnel should maintain maximum restraint and uphold the law to ensure peace and security. He also appealed to everyone not to follow rumors and provocations, but to seek solutions through dialogue, tolerance, and legal procedures.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has already formed a five-member investigation committee to probe the clash between two groups in Sunsari and to submit recommendations for long-term solutions to prevent such incidents in the future. A meeting held this morning in the presence of Home Minister Gurung decided to form a five-member committee led by a joint secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The committee has been mandated to investigate the facts of the incident and submit a report with necessary long-term measures and recommendations to prevent such incidents in the future within seven days.
After the clash between two groups and the death of one person on Sunday night in Kaptaanganj, Dewanganj Rural Municipality–3, Sunsari, the Sunsari District Administration Office issued an indefinite curfew order early in the morning in some areas of Dewanganj and Harinagar rural municipalities.
According to the order of the Chief District Officer, the curfew has been enforced from 7 a.m. on Monday until further notice. As per the order issued under Section 6(a) of the Local Administration Act, 2028 (1971), no person is allowed to move, gather, rally, demonstrate, hold meetings, assemblies, or encircle within the designated four boundaries of Harinagar, Bhutaha, Kaptaanganj, Ghuskhi, and Dewanganj market areas.
