Mingmar Tamang, the office chief and undersecretary of the President Chure Tarai–Madhes Conservation Development Committee, Program Implementation Unit Morang, was arrested at Biratnagar Airport with 666,000 rupees in cash of undisclosed source.
He was arrested on the 3rd of Shrawan. The police only recently provided information about the incident. Tamang, a resident of Bhimeshwar Municipality–9 in Dolakha, was about to travel from Biratnagar to Kathmandu on a Buddha Air flight. During a routine security check, 575 notes of 1,000 rupees and 300 notes of 500 rupees, totaling 666,000 rupees, were found hidden inside a black bag he was carrying.
When questioned about the legal source of the seized amount, Tamang failed to provide a satisfactory answer, after which the airport security guard took him into custody. Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Rajendra Timilsina, who was stationed at the airport, handed Tamang over to the Economic Crimes Branch of the District Police Office Morang along with the seized amount for further investigation.
However, the District Police Office is accused of trying to keep the matter under wraps. It is also claimed that there was pressure from higher authorities not to make the incident public.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Kavita Katuwal, chief of the District Police Office Morang, said the incident is still under investigation. She stated that the arrested individual could not verify the legal source of the money. According to her, preparations are underway to submit the investigation report to the District Government Attorney's Office.
