Landless squatters and unorganized settlers continued their protest on Thursday, demanding that their settlement and land ownership be ensured. They have been staging demonstrations at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu, alleging that the government evicted them without providing alternative arrangements.
They have stated that their protest will continue until the government resolves the issue. Squatter citizen Prem Bahadur Tamang objected that the government has lumped together squatters and encroachers without distinguishing between them. He said that the government should have investigated which citizens have land and which do not before removing squatter settlements, but it failed to do so. He also warned that their protest would continue until alternative arrangements are made for them.
He said, “Our protest will continue until the government properly manages the squatter citizens and resolves the problem. The protest will intensify further. Because, without even giving prior notice, the government evicted squatters based on just one day’s notice. Who has land? Who does not? Who is a squatter and who is an encroacher? The government can investigate. It should not have scattered squatter citizens as if in a dream. We will remain in protest until proper arrangements are made for us.”
On the 12th and 13th of Baisakh, the government used bulldozers to demolish squatter settlements along various rivers and riverbanks in the Kathmandu Valley. Although the government had promised to make alternative arrangements within 15 days, it has not been able to properly manage the squatters and unorganized settlers.
