The Department of Water and Meteorology has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in various parts of the country, urging people to be alert, citing the risk of floods, landslides and inundation. Along with this, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has intensified its preparedness.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Pradeep Kumar Koirala, said that the gates of the Koshi Barrage will be opened gradually today if the water flow in the river increases and there is a flood risk. Binod Parajuli, a flood expert at the Department of Water and Meteorology, informed that the water flow is being continuously monitored and there is a moderate risk of flooding in 21 districts.
The Authority has started necessary preparations for rescue and response in coordination with the security agencies. The Authority has urged the local level, security agencies and stakeholders to adopt high alert and take special precautions in areas at risk of riverbanks and landslides. In addition, the Authority requests the general public to refrain from traveling and unnecessary movement in risky areas.
Risk of sudden floods
The department has warned of sudden floods in rivers and streams flowing through various parts of the country. Stating that there is a risk, the general public in those places has been urged to adopt caution.
The department estimates that the risk of flash floods will increase in small rivers in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Ilam, Panchthar, Tehrathum, Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchowk, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Dhading, Makawanpur, Chitwan, Kaski, Tanahun, Syangja, Parbat, Baglung and surrounding districts today. Similarly, the department has projected that there will be a risk of flash floods in small rivers around Gulmi, Palpa, Arghakhanchi, Pyuthan, Nawalparasi (east and west), Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Doti, Dadeldhura, Kailali and Kanchanpur.
According to the department, the water level of the Koshi, Narayani, Bagmati, Karnali, Mahakali and their tributaries, as well as the Kankai, Kamala, Babai, East Rapti and West Rapti rivers, is below the danger line.
