The Supreme Court has ordered the release of former CPN-UML MP Laxmi Mahato Koiri, who was convicted in the murder of Armed Police Sub-Inspector Thaman Bik.
A joint bench of Supreme Court Justices Shrikant Poudel and Kumar Regmi ordered the release of Koiri on Thursday.
During the hearing of the writ petition, the Supreme Court ordered his release if he is not required to be detained in other cases.
The Janakpur High Court had sentenced him to 5 years in prison in the Thaman Bik murder case. Koiri was arrested the day after the hearing and sent to Jaleshwor Jail.
The order said that he should be released as his prisoner certificate dated 19 Asad was not in accordance with the law.
During the Madhesh movement, on 25 Bhadra 2072, ASI Thaman BK, who had come to Mahottari for duty after passing an exam for the United Nations mission from Hetauda, was attacked by protesters in Mahottari.
After the injured BK could not be treated at Jaleshwor Hospital, he was taken to Janakpur in an ambulance for further treatment when protesters took him out and beat him up in the former Anaitha VDC of Mahottari.
