RPP founding senior leader and former minister Fateh Singh Tharu passed away in Nepalgunj on Thursday at the age of 87.
He was rushed to Western Hospital for treatment after suffering a heart attack at his residence in Gharbari Tol, Nepalgunj, and died during treatment, said RPP Joint General Secretary Rishiraj Devkota.
He had served as a minister seven times, including in the Panchayat and multi-party periods, including education, communications, agriculture, defense, industry and commerce. During the Panchayat period, he was elected as a member of the National Panchayat in 2038 and 2043, and in the multi-party system, he was elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Banke 3 in 2051.
According to Nepalgunj litterateur Khagendra Giri 'Kopila', he was also the first person to do MA DFA from the Tharu community of western Nepal. ‘Tharu, who first entered politics under the Panchayat system and later joined the RPP, has always been a rebel in his political life,’ he said, ‘but he never abandoned his ideological ground and nationalist ideology.’
He started politics in 2023 during the Panchayat period as the Pradhan Panch of Hasnapur Village Panchayat in Banke. He was also the President of the Banke District Panchayat three times and a member of the National Village Separation Campaign Central Committee once.
Born as the eldest son of Deviram Tharu, a landowner of Thapuwa village in Banke, Tharu is also known in Nepalgunj as a leader of clean character who spent all his wealth in politics and is known as a leader of clean character.
Tharu’s last rites will be held on Friday at Sidhaniyaghat on the Rapti River, according to his family. He has two wives and four children.
