The government has arranged school buses for students staying in the squatter holding center to travel to and from school, Education and Sports Minister Sasmit Pokharel has said. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he said that two buses have been arranged for children from the holding centers in Kharipati and Bode in Bhaktapur to travel to and from school. “Until the long-term problems of the squatters are resolved, the school buses will be used to transport them to and from school,” he said. After the holding center in Kirtipur was submerged, the squatter families have been shifted to Bode. When asked how the students enrolled in Kirtipur will now travel to and from school, he said that school buses have been arranged. He said that options are also being discussed for students who want to change schools. But most of the students had expressed their desire to study at Vishwaniketan Mavi in Tripureshwor.
According to the Ministry of Education, there are 21 students in Kharipati and 18 in Bode. Education Minister Pokharel met them and provided them with relief and educational materials on Monday. His secretariat has stated that bags, notebooks, pens and sports materials have been distributed to the students.
Minister Pokharel, after meeting the children and their parents, had said that the government is committed to ensuring the right to education. Earlier, a team of six ministers led by Home Minister Sudhan Gurung had met the Sukum residents and monitored the holding center.
