The government has appointed senior aviation and tourism expert Maheshwor Bhakta Shrestha as the Executive Chairman and General Manager of Nepal Airlines Corporation.

Shrestha was appointed as the Executive Chairman and General Manager of the Nepal Airlines Corporation at a meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Tuesday, informed government spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology Sasmit Pokharel. Shrestha is considered an expert with more than five decades of experience in the fields of civil aviation, tourism management and airline operations in Nepal. He worked as a corporate director at the corporation until 2049 BS. He held various responsibilities at the corporation for about 25 years. He led the corporation as the head of corporate planning from 1975 to 1985 and as the director of the corporate, marketing and sales and commercial department from 1985 to 1992.

Shrestha graduated with a first-class first place in the Postgraduate Diploma in Transport and Development with specialization in Air Transport from the University of Westminster, UK, in 1979. He also holds a master's degree in commerce from Tribhuvan University. He has also received high-level training in aviation management, corporate planning and management from prestigious institutions such as McGill University in Canada, Administrative Staff College in India, and McDonnell Douglas in the US.

He is also known as a senior consultant in airline, aviation and tourism management in Nepal and South Asia. Since 1985, he has worked on dozens of consulting projects on policy formulation, strategic planning, aircraft fleet planning, tourism development and institutional reforms for organizations such as the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Nepal Tourism Board, Asian Development Bank, National Planning Commission, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Nepal Airlines Corporation and others.

He was involved in preparing the corporation's 10-year fleet plan, serving as the member secretary of the Boeing-757 procurement evaluation committee, preparing the strategic plan for Nepal Tourism Year 2011 and reviewing the National Civil Aviation Policy.

Shrestha is also active in the academic and literary fields. He has written the book 'Nepali Aviation and Tourism', published in 2000, which is used as a reference book for the postgraduate level of tourism studies at Purbanchal University. He is also the co-author of the book 'A Man with a Mission: Life and Times of Captain Bobby Bikram Shah', based on the biography of Nepal's first commercial pilot, Captain Bobby Bikram Shah, published in 2023.

Shrestha has been publishing research-based articles in various national and international journals and magazines on civil aviation, tourism, air service management, air fare determination, air cargo, fleet planning, public enterprise management and tourism development for more than four decades. A former independent director of Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited, he was also a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport, London since 1980.
