The Valley Traffic Police has issued fines and released vehicles that were parked suspiciously in front of the gates of various media houses including Kantipur Publications, Online News and Himalaya Television on Monday for unauthorized parking. The traffic police said that the vehicles were released after being issued a citation after the owner of the vehicle contacted them.
Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office Chief SSP Suresh Kafle confirmed to Kantipur that the vehicle was released after issuing a fine as per the law after the person related to the vehicle came into contact with them. 'We had been taking such action before. This time, we have also posted it on social media after it became widely publicized,' he said.
According to Kafle, the vehicle owner has been fined between Rs 500 and Rs 1,500 depending on the situation. 'We have also fined 14 vehicles parked illegally in other places, including the five vehicles that were in the public domain,' he said.
Although the traffic police have already taken legal action for the parking offense, he said that the purpose of keeping the vehicle blocking the gate of the media house is a matter of separate investigation. 'The purpose for which the vehicles were parked is a matter of investigation.'
He also said that the police were initially unable to remove the vehicles immediately due to suspicions that explosives or other suspicious materials were kept in them.
'There was some delay in the morning due to suspicions that explosives or other suspicious materials were kept in the vehicles. First, the civil police went and checked,' he said.
On Monday morning, drivers parked their vehicles in front of the gates of Kantipur Publications, Online News and Himalaya Television, blocking traffic. The incident made it difficult for journalists and employees of the media houses to leave the office and go to report. Traffic was affected in some media houses for about five hours.
Regarding this incident, the Federation of Nepali Journalists has demanded an immediate impartial investigation and necessary legal action against the culprits, saying that it was an attempt to intimidate journalists and create obstacles to independent journalism. Police said that although they have taken action for the parking violation, the investigation into the motive behind the incident and the role of those involved is ongoing.
