Umesh Shrestha has been appointed as the Chairman of the Press Council of Nepal. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has stated that he was appointed as per the decision of the Council of Ministers on Ashad 24.
Shrestha is an established digital journalist, editor, blogger and fact-checker. He is still running the blog 'MySansar', which he started 21 years ago, as a place to express independent views on political, social and contemporary issues. He is popularly known by the nickname 'Salokya' in blogging.
While presenting the appointment letter, Minister of Communications Timilsina said that he has high expectations for the chairmen of both the organizations who were selected through a competitive process and took on the responsibility. Stating that the recommendation committee selected them based on the belief that they can discharge their responsibilities in a fair, impartial and result-oriented manner, the ministry stated that Minister of Communications Timilsina emphasized that regulatory bodies should discharge their roles seriously.
Minister Timilsina has said that the role of the Press Council will be important in making the media sector more responsible, dignified and effective. Stating that misinformation and disinformation are the major challenges facing the media sector at present, he pointed out the need to identify them and move forward in a solution-oriented manner.
Stating that if the media sector can be strengthened, the media world will benefit the most, Minister Timilsina said that the Council should make necessary positive interventions for that.
