Ganesh Nepali of Mugu, who attempted self-immolation by pouring petrol on himself in front of the Department of Passports at Tripureshwar on Thursday, has died.

With about 55 percent of his body burned, he died during treatment at the Burn Center of Bir Hospital, according to Kathmandu District Police spokesperson SP Pawan Bhattarai. Ganesh's brother Madan said the hospital had informed them of his brother's death. However, the hospital has yet to make a formal announcement of his passing.

Two people, including an advisor from the Prime Minister's Secretariat, are coordinating with the deceased's family at the hospital. Officials recently appointed at the National Academy of Medical Sciences—including the Vice Chancellor, Rector, Registrar, and the hospital director—are also in discussions with them, according to a hospital staff member. There is a heavy presence of security personnel in the hospital premises.

Ganesh, who had been living in Bhaktapur with his wife and daughter, worked as a rider through a ride-sharing app. On Friday afternoon, after Metropolitan Police attempted to wheel-lock and confiscate his parked motorcycle, he attempted self-immolation.
