The government has appointed Govinda Bahadur Karki as Chief Secretary. The Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday appointed Karki, Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, as Chief Secretary, according to government spokesperson Sasmita Pokharel.

The government appointed a new Chief Secretary because Suman Raj Aryal is set to retire from July 9 due to the age limit of 58 years. He was overseeing administrative affairs at the Prime Minister's Office. Pushkar Sapkota (Law), Kiran Raj Sharma (Development Management), and Khagendra Prasad Nepal are also secretaries at the Prime Minister's Office.

Secretary Karki played a leading role in preparing the government's 100-point administrative reform agenda, which was approved by the Cabinet meeting on March 26, the very day Balendra Shah became Prime Minister.

Govinda Bahadur Karki, who has been appointed Chief Secretary, is a permanent resident of Bhojpur district. Karki entered government service in 1996 and was promoted to secretary on September 5, 2024.

Of the ten people who became secretaries in 2021, and those promoted ahead of Karki in 2022, 2023, and 2024, he was selected by the government, leaving out those promoted before him.
