The Bihar police have arrested two Nepalis on charges of smuggling while bringing fertilizer from the Indian market. The Indian Armed Border Force (SSB) apprehended the two Nepalis while they were bringing chemical fertilizer from the Indian market Sonbarsa near the Sarlahi district headquarters and handed them over to the police. They were arrested six days ago.
Inspector Dharmendra Kumar, chief of the Sonbarsa police station, said that Nagendra Prasad Singh and Suresh Prasad Singh were arrested. In a telephone conversation with ekantipur, Inspector Singh said, "The SSB caught them while they were illegally transporting fertilizer and handed them over to the police." Kumar also said that they were presented before the local court. According to him, the two Singhs were taking 8 sacks of fertilizer to Nepal.
Home Prasad Adhikari, Assistant Chief District Officer of Sarlahi, said they had received information that the two had been presented in court. He said there was a possibility that both would be released on bail soon. He said, "The court process is ongoing there. According to the information we have received, there is a possibility they will be released on bail."
Both are permanent residents of Balara Municipality Ward No. 5. Manoj Mohan Kumar Singh, Ward Chair of Balara-5, said he had learned that they had brought the fertilizer for household use.
He said, "I was also in Kathmandu at the time. According to the information I received, they are not smugglers; they brought it to store for their own fields." Ward Chair Singh said that because the government could not provide fertilizer to farmers on time, they ended up being detained. He said, "There is a big problem in Madhesh right now. There is neither water nor fertilizer. It looks like there will be a drought this year as well, just like last year."
