The government has started depositing Rs 25,000 in the bank accounts of squatters in holding centers for self-management.
Squatters in some holding centers in Kathmandu have informed that money has been received in their bank accounts. According to Machakaji Maharjan Kaji, the project head of the empowered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee, money has been paid into the accounts of 193 of the 388 families in the holding center.
‘Due to the busyness of the software, the message has not been received yet. We will inform you about whose account the money has gone after the delivered message arrives,’ Maharjan said.
According to him, the accounts of the remaining displaced people in the holding center and outside will also be paid soon. ‘Today, we are finalizing the list of those outside the holding center. The process is moving forward to accommodate everyone who has applied,' Maharjan said.
Out of the 180 million that has been released, only 4.9 million have been paid so far. But some have problems because their bank accounts have not been opened and they do not have citizenship, he said.
The government had initially ordered the displaced to leave the holding center on 12 Asad and then extended the time to 19 Asad. But Maharjan said that they were flexible in this as the government was late in making payments for self-management.
'We had estimated that they would have enough time to find a place to live on their own. But the money sent yesterday afternoon has not reached us yet. Therefore, we have nothing to do with extortion,' he said.
He said that the government would also distribute the 3-month rent amount at the rate of 15,000 soon. Maharjan said, "Once we get a record of them living on their own, we will also pay the rent," he said .
