More than 250 pigs have died in Gorkha due to African swine fever infection. More than 250 pigs have died in the past 3 months, said Ananta Koirala, head of the Veterinary Hospital and Animal Service Expert Center, Gorkha.
120 pigs from a farmer's farm in Gorkha Municipality-6 have died due to African swine fever infection in the past week. He said that African swine fever has been detected in pigs in Gorkha Municipality-6, 7, 8 and Shahid Lakhan Rural Municipality-6.
‘African swine fever has killed pigs in droves,’ he said, ‘Initially, there were symptoms such as fever, not eating, and spots on the body. After the pigs fell ill, they tested positive for African swine fever using a rapid test.’ The office said that the data on pigs that died from African swine fever is still being compiled.
Farmers have been urged to be vigilant after African swine fever was found in pigs. He said that since there is no specific treatment for this disease caused by a virus, farmers have been warned to control and prevent its spread.
Koiral also said that farmers have been advised to keep sick pigs separate from healthy pigs and adopt biosecurity methods in and around the cages. ‘We have also provided biosecurity materials for prevention, we have told farmers to be vigilant,’ he said.
