Kantipur journalists Sudip Kaini and Rupa Gahatraj have been awarded the ‘Rotary Journal Award 2026’.
According to Rotary International District 3292, Kaini received the award in the basic education, literacy and digital literacy category and Gahatraj in the local peace and conflict prevention/resolution category.
Kaini writes news on social and contemporary issues including education, health from Kathmandu, while Gahatraj is Kantipur’s Banke district correspondent.
The awards were distributed at a ceremony held in Kathmandu on Friday. 50 journalists participated in the competition for the Rotary Journal Award 2026 with 257 news items in various categories. Out of them, seven outstanding journalists in various subjects have been honored with the awards.
Journalist Tirtha Koirala, a member of the selection committee, informed about the awards, which were selected based on the evaluation of journalists. The award-winning journalists were given a cash prize of Rs 51,000 and a certificate.
Similarly, this year, Ukalo Online correspondent Sagar Budhathoki was awarded in the maternal and child health category, Sunsari journalist Bikal Regmi in the drinking water, sanitation and hygiene category, Okhaldhunga journalist Saroj Dhungel in the disease prevention and treatment category, Sagarmatha FM in the environment, climate change and resilience category, Arbashi Basnyat from Kathmandu, and Pokhara journalist Bijay Nepal in the community and economic development category. The awards were distributed in seven categories, said Suresh Acharya, chairman of the awards committee.
Rotary International District 3292 has been presenting awards to journalists since 2011/12. This year, senior journalist Adityaman Shrestha has been awarded the 'Lifetime Achievement Award'. This award has been received by senior journalists Bhairav Risal and Bharat Dutt Koirala earlier.
Rotary has been working in social sectors including education, health, drinking water and it will continue, said Rotary District Governor Binod Koirala.
He said that he has been giving awards and honors to journalists who have contributed through news writing in the economic, social and environmental sectors in appreciation of their contributions.
